Complete & Original GSA CC dollar sets

roadrunnerroadrunner Posts: 28,310 ✭✭✭✭✭
A friend of mine purchased 3 full sets of CC dollars back in the 1970's through the GSA. He did this on a sailor's salary at $1000 a set if I remember correctly. He still has 2 sets left as he sold one sometime in the 1980's. Curious as to any premium associated with a full set with all the orig paperwork down to the ordering documents. Anyone have any experince with these?

Assuming the set is of relatively high grade and the plastic cases are all in good shape, a complete set like that is definately worth a premium above and beyond what a similar PCGS/NGC set would be worth IMO. It would all depend on the grades of the coins however, as it isn't too difficult IMO to assemble a complete MS60-MS62 set with the exception of a couple of dates which are relatively scarce. As far as original paperwork, boxes, etc, that too makes the set even more desirable IMO.

It would be impossible to make 3 sets since 3 of the dates only had 1 single coin in the whole hoard.
The 79CC by itself would make his money back then some.
Contact gsaguy, he keeps the current prices.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

    Dog,

I was thinking that same thing, but I figured he meant 3 sets without those dates.

Dragon, there was only one circulated coin each of the following dates: 1889-CC, 1892-CC, 1893-CC. So I am not sure what he means by complete, there were no uncirculated coins of those three dates in the GSA hoard.

These Gsa's are getting to be more popular by the day. Original boxes & cards add to the premium. From what I understand even the original shipping boxes sell for money. Look on ebay common date cards are going for $10.00 and better date for even more.

I've had people give me a bad time when I wanted good boxes and cards with my coins. Yes the coins are most important, but these things sell for extra money due to the Gsa holders. So IMO it's important for everything to be intact.

I still have the box and card that came with my 79-CC directly from the GSA. I now regret busting it out three years ago only to get a MS62 from NGC.

Not really, it is the only link to the GSA I have for that 79-CC. I shattered the holder when I busted it out.

I would assume that by complete my friend meant the ones that gsa offered in quantity and at fixed prices...less those 3 particular dates. I'll have to go back and verify. With the increasing craze for originality and documentation you just never know how much value a tight paper trail and history can add. thanks for the help guys and gals.
