That thread was over the top.. GET SOME THERAPY!!!!!!

A thread posted earlier about extending an additional decimal place for MS coins where coins that fall between a 65 and a 66 could be graded 65.4 etc. prompted me to respond with this.
Years ago, back in the days of LP vinyl recordings, I worked in a high-end audio shop. Very expensive equipment was sold to some very "sick" people. There were some that were so nuts about their sound systems that they would tweak and tweak and tweak until they thought it couldn't get any better only to have to start all over again when the latest new amplifier was released. Arguments between the truly sick would be about weather the stylus entering the grove at an angle of 15 degrees sounded better than the stylus entering the groove at 17 degrees. (FYI, 17 sounds better). Does a record stored at 65 degrees F. sound better than a record stored at 72 degrees? (again, FYI, 65 sounds better). It was nuts!!!! I learned a lot about the truly sick by selling "tweaked out" audio components for close to 15 years. I remember going over to the home of one of our better customers to listen to his system. It was impressive to say the least. Great sound. I found myself going through his record collection. There wasn't a single music album in the whole stack. No Beetles, Stones, Doors. No Symphonies, no nothing except test records. One minute tracks of some guy banging on a drum or someone running scales on a flute. What a bunch of crap. The truly sick forget what it's all about.
I read through the replies to the earlier thread and I thought to myself, What a bunch of crap, so I decided to share my feeling on the subject. Here is my main thought. SOME OF YOU ARE TRULY SICK!!!!!!! GET SOME HELP!!!!! It's bad enough having to read some thread about how screwed up PCGS is cause they sent back your perfect MS63 submission cause they didn't think it was as pretty as you thought it was. "How dare they think my coin a lowly AU58? How dare they?" Now, if some of you get your way, we have to read about how screwed up PCGS is because they thought your coin a lowly 63.2 and you were sure it was an easy .6. What a bunch of crap!!! I can see the first thread now. It reads, "Need some help?" "I'm thinking about re-submitting this coin for upgrade. It's an MS65.5 but I think it'll go .8. Please look at my scan of the coin and let me know what you think. Thanks!" IT'S SICK!!! GET SOME THERAPY!!!!!!!
For those of you who don't agree with my assessment of your mental health; FLAME ON!!! I can take it.

You forgot to mention the net weight of the tonearm pressing down on the record. Didn't that matter a lot too? Now I am all worried.

Man, I can argue that all day long!!
(Thanks for the reality break. I needed a thread like this one.)

What grading company??? PCGS or NGC??

Remember we had it tracking so lightly if the bass got too loud the needle started bouncing around.
Ah the good old days of the 8 track tapes.
You couldn't set it TOO light. Otherwise, when you passed out and tumbled over, the record would skip and wake you right back up...

They were all bought raw.
While you were ranting, I just kept thinking, "All that time arguin about this amp vs. that amp, and this stylus and this temp, etc. etc. and then someone invented the CD.....I imagine that slabbed coins were sort of like the CD when they first came out...I wonder what the next "numismatic CD" will be, and will it make all of the current bickering moot?
I wish there were a few more forum members like Buffchips around to tell it like it is.
Enjoy your coins folks, and g'nite!

Interesting. On the one hand i can see your point.
You are critical of people who get upset because some coin worth possibly thousands of dollars is described as worth far, far less
which is what typically happens when mint state coins worth thousands of dollars are downgraded into AU58 holders.
On the other hand, if you back away from the issue just a little further, into the view that a non collector would have, he would think
most of us are sick because we spend thousands and thousands of dollars on small pieces of metal you can't drive or eat.
One could put forth the idea that If we were all rational, we would work full time at finding salvation (some have) then spend the rest
of our time saving others for in the end we either go on forever or we end and anyone that preoccupies themselves with coins is like
Nero who fiddles while Rome burns.

Great question. Grading is the question, essentially. Better grading is the next numismatic CD.....and.....
my suspicions are that when objective rational grading is implemented, variances of about .3 will be the norm on regrades done with 5
or more graders.
the issue is exceedingly simple: no matter what a grading co. would do, there would never be enough imaginary "precision" to satisfy certain people. they just can't be satisfied w/ someone else's OPINION, which is all a grade is. they just gotta have a "guarantee" that it (the grade) is 839,302,829% correct.
as a former hi-fi-head myself, i totally & completely agree 100% w/ your rant. the difference is that at the peak, i had well over 400 records (now morphed into 1000+ compact discs)

slabing co. for THEIR opinion on a coin, rather than take on the horrifying responsibility of actually learning how to form YOUR
OWN opinion yourself."
I respectfully disagree. I buy slabbed coins, not because i don't know how to grade but because slabbed coins are coins that come with
an opinion as to their quality which is rendered by a fairly disinterested third party which makes them easier to sell if when the times
comes to sell it.
And, i can often buy coins which i believe are ms64 (for example) in ms 63 holders which is a better deal than paying what typically comes
raw which is a ms 64 coin that carries a ms 65 price.
(If your mother came to you and asked you, "Dorkie, my love, I want to take your inheritance and buy coins. Should I buy them raw or
slabbed? From ACG or NGC?")
<< <i>dorkkarl - Do you have any objection to buying slabbed coins in person, where you can confirm the opinion of the graders? >>
hey coppernicus, i have bought at least 1000+ slabed coins, so definitely no objection whatsoever. but i own zero slabed coins right now
for the collector, the most fundamental rule of buying coins is: "do not buy coins sight-unseen".
<< <i>slabbed coins ... come with an opinion as to their quality ... rendered by a fairly disinterested third party >>
hey anaconda, i think that's confusing 2 issues. 3d party grading: no problem here. i vehemently advocate 3d party grading, which amounts to another opinion from, as you noted, a theoretically "disinterested party".
but i submit to you that the 3d party grade is not what makes the coin "easier to sell if when the times comes to sell it." (your quote), but instead, it is the marketing of slabs that makes the coin easier to sell.
<< <i>If your mother came to you and asked you, "Dorkie, my love, I want to take your inheritance and buy coins. Should I buy them raw or slabbed? From ACG or NGC? >>
in such a case, i would admonish mum not spend the inheritance on coins but on stocks, or rental real-estate, etc. she does not enjoy coins, & i contend that someone who does not enjoy collectable coins has no business buying them. there's no fathomable reason why someone ought to choose to invest $ in coins when there are so many better investment opportunities available.

<< <i>coins that come with an opinion as to their quality >>
This I disagree with. It is NOT an opinion of the quality of the coin. It is an opinion of the GRADE of the coin. Not the same thing.

How will using decimals improve the situation when we have so much trouble getting the whole numbers right?

Hi Adrian. Thank you for the excellent (and true) reminder about salvation. You are very correct. King Solomon figured this very thing out near the end of his life. Though he pursued and obtained MANY great riches including "the peculiar treasures of kings" - among them rare coins? (Ecc. 2:8) - Solomon ultimately reached the conclusion that all is VANITY except to be in awe of GOD and to cling to the perfect wisdom that HE alone provides (Ecc. 12: 13).

When you take them so serious that it rules your life, then indeed
you have a problem . While I have not done a scientific study, It is
my opinion that perhaps 80% of collectors are not comfortable
with their own judgement on grading coins. But given a coin graded
by a reputable service, the majority of collectors are quite capable of selecting
the superior quality in a particular grade.

man, sometimes i really, really miss vinyl!

<< <i>It is my opinion that perhaps 80% of collectors are not comfortable with their own judgement on grading coins. >>
bear, is the problem really that they don't trust their own judgement in grading? or could it be that they just haven't truly learned what they really, really like?

Now thats sick!
