Record Price for 1972T PSA8?

Recently, a PSA8 Willie Mays In Action (Card#50) closed on eBay. The final price was $386.00. I've seen plenty of 1972 Topps PSA9s or 10s in this price range. But I've NEVER seen a PSA8 - ANY PSA8 - sell for this kind of price.
Granted, it's the best-centered example of this card I've ever seen. And the population (~24) is misleading since this card is rarely available. All that aside, $386 is a lot of friggin money for an EIGHT.

    I once got $186.50 for a Gil Hodges 1972 in 8.
  • Like alot of other crazy prices, I don't think it means a whole lot. Just that a few people really wanted it now, and didn't want to wait.
That price does seem high (even for a nine)! It's just one of those peculiar cards that eludes the collectors.
I collect the 1969 football set, and for some reason the stupid Roman Gabriel card ALWAYS has something wrong with it. So if a nice 8 came up for auction, although it seems like an every day card, the set builders know how tuff it is, wouldn't want to wait for the day they could get one for $20.00 or so..............and then we all know what happens next!

There were four different bidders above $300. I think if another 8 hit eBay soon, it would likely also go for $300+. Of course, that would be assuming the eye appeal would be as good as the one listed in this auction.

It still kills me that I missed a PSA 9 Mays IA on eBay that closed at $456 in December of 2001. I came across it in the completed auctions while looking for something else. Thank god for my $65 PSA 8!

interchanges> I think most all of the builders of the 72 set will tell you that among the star/HOF cards, the toughest to find in high grade are the Mays IA and Aaron IA.
The L/R centering in these two cards is almost always something like 95/5.

  • Mike,
Your last post justifies the 386 bones.

Considering that several HOFers don't break $350 in PSA9, that's still a LOT of money for an EIGHT. But at the same time, it is a HOFer - it's not like the $200+ someone paid for that 75 McEnaney a while back - only to see the pop shoot up on it.

    Mike,

I have 2 record prices that top that one:

    Record # 1 Price

    Record Tying price - Card # 2

What is the lowest amount anyone has paid for a 1972 Straight 8?

    Regards,

Alan> Actually, it's prices like those that prompted me to rebuild the 72 set in the first place.
