Question on Kennedy Half Dollars

Does anyone have an image of what a MS66 or MS67 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar would look like? I've got some 1964 Kennedy Half Dollars in real shiny and MS condition, but I'm just trying to figure out what you really need to obtain MS66 or POSSIBLY MS67 .... besides luck of course.

I don't have an image handy, but I can tell you that I went through 71 rolls (1420 coins) and found four worth submitting. They came back as two MS63, one MS65 and one MS66. This is a very, very tough coin due to the poor handling it received at the mint.

  • I don't have any pic's with me but it looks like any more then 2 or 3 ticks will get you less then 66. I can not speak for the 67's I collect mine in 66.

it would be easier if you would post an image of your best one, clear and close up, both sides.

generally, an MS66 or 67 will be a virtually flawless coin. look at it closely: if there are ANY marks you can see with your naked eyes, it's unlikely to be a 66 or 67.

  • baley everyone of my 66's have a tick or mark that can be seen most have 2 or 3

  • Heritage has some pics of MS-66 and 67 Kennedys in their auction archives. A 66 or 67 will have very few marks, especially in the focal areas on the reverse (shield and tail feathers) and the obverse (fields, cheek, neck). Many times, the difference between a 66 and 67 will be strike. Very rarely will you see a 67 with mushy tail feathers, which is really common with this issue. Although 66's are generally easy to come by with some effort, 67's are rare and very hard to find.

Most MS67's and 68's will come from Mint sets - the coins that I have seen in these grades have an almost prooflike, or almost matte-prooflike finish. What gets Kennedies downgraded, particularly the nickel clad issues are minute dings that appear on the surface of the coin and are virtually invisible to the naked eye, but I've actually seen a progression of MS66, 67, and 68 side by side, and have been able to compare the number of these minute hits between the grades.

The grade criteria will be just about the same as the 1964.

    Hey Lori,

I have a 1964 in MS66 that looks very similar to yours. Yours is more colorful, though. I think they must be cousins.

I own a rainbow toned PCGS MS67 1964 Kennedy, but find this one a bit more interesting.

I saw a PCGS MS67 1964 Kennedy at the Baltimore show. It was brilliant with bright rainbow toning. Super flashy, and super expensive. They were asking 7500. I didn't bother to dicker. mdwoods
