What do u consider...

Rare? Many dealers have rare in there names but what do u think is rare? Is a 1909-S VDB rare? or CC gold? Also how low a mintage or survival rate do u feel they have to have to be rare?

  • IMO-

    1909-s vdb - VERY common

"rare" - something w/ less that say 200/250 surviving pieces (in all grades)

  • My better answer is what I don't consider rare....conditional registry certified "rareties. Just because there are only 5 MS 70 1996 (fill in the blanks) coins in the pop doesn't make them rare.

And I'm one of those who does think an 09-S VDB is rare...because I don't have one yet...image

sounds like you mean "from the economics standpoint", in which case, "rare" characterizes how well supply meets demand.

"rare" is also defined on the rarity scale as r5, but even if only 5 of a coin are known, but only 2 people collect it, it is NOT rare (in the economics sense).

if there are 450,000 s-vdb's in existence, but 500,000 collectors looking to buy 1, then the s-vdb would be considered "rare".

There were 9,147 flag bearer $5 coins produced. Other issues from '96 were
made in limited numbers. 1996 was before the rush to moderns, so how many
of the regular issue coins do you think were saved? Among those, how many
survive in high grade? (Try to remember only a small fraction were made in high
grade). How many circulating varieties were saved?

There were 484,000 09-s vdb cents produced and these coins were widely hoarded.
They are frequently found in high grade. There were nearly three billion 72-D cents
produced and a relatively tiny percentage were saved. You will find dozens of the
former available for sale in high grade before you find one of the latter. If one is in-
terested only in high grade then to that person the 72-D is far more rare.

There are lots of definitions of rare and one is not necessarily more correct than
another. But once we pick a definition we should use it for all the coins we collect.

  • Point taken...and as you said...there are many definitions (just like many opinions on grading services image) I don't think all will ever agree...

I like the 09-S vdb and consider it a great collector coin with a long history of desirability. And I certainly
consider it rare in high grade and desirable in any grade.

    Please don't misunderstand my point.

I consider each and every toned Morgan rare as no 2 look exactly alike. Along the same lines then every toned coin is rare.

the nicer the coin toning then the "more rare" it is in my opinion.

I consider a coin Scarce if there are fewer examples extant than there are collectors who would like to have one. A coin is Scarce if it is difficult to find, and kind of expensive

I consider a coin Rare if there are FAR fewer examples extant than there are collectors who would really like to have one. A coin is RARE if it is very difficult to find and is very expensive.

If I can afford to buy it its NOT rare

Edited to add: Or if I am willing to tell my wife how much I paid for it its NOT rare.
