    << <i>1955 Red Man Richie Ashburn PSA-9 (smr $925.) >>

Jay, Good pick. But my guess is $1000 would only be a deposit on a nine. I would not be
surprised when the Psa 8 Ashburn in the Superior auction closes that it goes for close
to a grand with fees included. My guess for final hammer price with fees is $750-$800.
Not bad for a card with a $325 Smr. I put a bid of $400 and was topped in two hours.
I know the original owner was looking for $1100 on that card.

If I had a free $1000 I'd go with a nm graded copy of the 1952 Ted Williams red man card.
Or even some of the 54's or 55's I need in nm/mt grade.

ACONTE - You are 100% correct that the Ashburn price would exceed that amount by alot. But based on Luxury Wines game plan of using SMR, I had to go by that price. Also the other 4 cards I chose would no doubt excced the smr price too!...jay

    Guys,

I realize that many of the card prices in the SMR are inaccurate... Heck if I could pick up a PSA 8 71 Munson @ $175 I would take 10... ( T he last one on EBAy closed at over $600 and I have never seen one sell for less than $400). I had to use something as a common reference point and felt the SMR was the most common point of reference for the members of this board..... But your thoughts give me an idea for another post.

SMR on the 58 cards (in PSA 8) that I currently need to finish my 1970 Topps Baseball set is $798. If someone has these specific 58 cards in PSA 8, I will gladly pay $202 shipping & handling for an even $1000. image

I would first start off by asking for the 1971 Topps Greatest moments card of Johnny Bench in a PSA 9 (SMR $800
and then I would love take the Joe Pepitone PSA 9 for $200. I think that would be a fair deal.

Or perhaps I would buy a 1954 Wilson Franks Ray Jablonski PSA 8 for book at $850 and then buy a 1971 Topps Greatest Moments PSA 8 of Jim Fregosi for $50, followed up with a Alex Johnson PSA 8 for $50 and card #1 from the 1971 Topps set of the Baltimore Orioles in a PSA 8 BV of $50.
Any of these deals would satisfy all my collecting habits for the 2003 year.

    1954
Looking for high grade rookie cards and unopened boxes/cases

    I would either pick

    a) 1964 Topps Ernie Banks #55 PSA 9 (SMR=$900)

    or

    b) 1964 Topps Lou Brock #29 PSA 9 (SMR=$385)
    1964 Topps Harmon Killebrew #177 PSA 9 (SMR=$310)
    1964 Topps Billy Williams #175 PSA 9 (SMR=$275)

All are tough to find and fairly low pops for star cards....the Banks pop has recently doubled from 4 to 8, although the ones I have seen have had boarderline centering.... I think the Killebrew is the toughest of these... pop of 3 and I haven't seen one for sale since I started building this set... Both the Banks and the Williams are available in Superior's current auction....

I am going to go with cards that I cannot find or cannot find for anywhere near SMR.

1888 N162 Goodwin Champions Dan Brouthers PSA 4 $500 because I cannot find any 19th century material for anything close to "book"

1910 E93 Standard Caramel Eddie Plank PSA 5 $175 because Plank is going to be very tough to get a card of and $175 seems awfully low

1961-62 Fleer Al Attles card #1 PSA 7 $140 because everytime I bid on this card it goes for at least double SMR

1933 Delong Bill Terry card #4 PSA 4 $150 because I think the Delongs are great looking cards and I do not have one nor a card of Terry

How about this collection of rookies from the '65 set in nm/mt?

    Morgan -- $145
    Tiant -- $35
    McClain -- $55
    Murakami -- $75
    Carlton -- $260
    Hunter -- $150
    McGraw/Swoboda -- $45
    Stottlemyer -- $50
    Perez -- $175

    TOTAL -- $990

My most recent SMR is pretty old...so things might be different now, but that's a nice pile of cards for a grand!

I love the fighters, just watching old tapes of them is good enough for me. I don't even know if cards were made of the great fighter/goons i.e. Dave cement head Semenko, Ed boxcar Hospadar, Crazy Craig Coxe, Tim big bird Hunter, Jay Miller time, Jay count out Caufield, John cords Kordic, Joey ko Kocur. I know Proset put everybody and their brother in hockey sets. I just couldn't bring myself to purchase a PSA proset card.

NHLfightguy-Most of those guys have rookie cards that are not in proset. Usually early to mid 1980's OPC. Ed boxcar Hospadar-brings back memories of the Montreal Forum and the Claude Lemiuex incident, greasing up faces and the post-broad street bullies.
