Kennedy Guys- What's your take on this? UPDATED: Coin Recieved.

I jumped on this BIN without fully knowing what it is.
-Just seemed "right". Non SMS's are tough in 66 and then add the Obverse DD?

It's an SMS! No doubt. Full mirrors with even a touch of frosting/light cameo. I still like the coin- the doubling is very pronouned, but would have certainly liked it much more had it proven to be a bussiness strike!

As someone below asks: Since when does PCGS state these DDO's to be "Error" coins?!

  • not bad except for the $29.50 price tag on the coin. image
PCGS sets under The Thomas Collections. Modern Commemoratives @ NGC under "One Coin at a Time". USMC Active 1966 thru 1970" The real War.
  • Looks like an SMS from the photo, but surely PCGS wouldn't have forgotten that on the label. Would love to see some close-ups of the DDO when you get the piece.

That's my question: Is the DDO on business strikes or SMS's?
I tried finding this info and could only locate these graded out with NGC (on their website's population page) as REGULAR Business strikes and NOT SMS's!

    Gee, I hope so.
I sold a killer MS66 1966 for $525.00 early last summer and would love to replace it (with the DDO as an added bonus!) with this one at $50.

Chances are this is an sms, I have about 10-15 66 sms ddo. I have only seen one that looked non sms, but it also looked like a doctored up ms that once could have been an sms. I was sending them to ANACS as PCGS did not designate the ddo on the 66sms, although this looks like an older holdered blue label coin. The best thing to do is to call ANACS or Bill Fivaz or JT Stanton and ask if they are familiar with a business strike ddo for 1966. ANACS could just check their pop as I am sure they would have at least one pop'd if they are around, and then they could confirm that indeed there is a business strike.

I'll cross my finger for you as if it is a business strike I think you got a steal. $50 is a little much to pay if it is a 66 sms strike, not too much, but a little high. Still a very cool coin as the doubling is very evident even with the naked eye.

Is the doubling on the chin, lips and ear?

The seller's description says that the coin has mirror-like fields on both sides, whickh leads me to believe it's probably a SMS coin. As Morris observed, $50 is a bit too much for a SMS DD. I remember the first 1966 business strike half I bought when they were first released in August 1966. Every coin in the dealer's roll had deep prooflike surfaces with very heavy die polish, so yours could be a similar coin.

Let us know what you think when you receive the coin.

Jim, (and others) I agree, certainly LOOKS like an SMS per the photos, but the PCGS insert number reads as a Business Strike.

-When the coin arrives I'll check into it a bit more.

Since when has PCGS labeled DDO's as Mint Errors?

    hey pat

in his book on the series, James Wiles cautions that you should match up all the diagnostics he lists to be sure which of the many DDO's you may have. there were some on both types of coins, regular business strikes as well as SMS issues. it's easy to confuse them, just as it's sometimes difficult to distinguish between SMS and RBS issues. realistically, an early strike business issue shouldn't be to much different from a late stage SMS. and given that i have many mint set coins which have PL surfaces, well.........

just today i was at the local shop and passed on two 1965's. it's just too hard sometimes to know which is which. these 2 had smooth clear fields but evidence of die polish that led me to see them as RBS. it was the poor strikes that stopped me from buying them.

PCGS said I had to submit my DDR Liberty Nickels under the error service.

So I guess the answer to the question: Since when does PCGS state these DDO's to be "Error" coins?

The answer is if they have not assigned a specific number to the variety.

Thanks DD55- That makes sense. A bit of a change in policy, but understandable.
