I'm appalled at the reaction to question!

I've been reading the board, I do for coin education, but to find out about shilling, is that the word?, and your responces, well the arrogance of this board, please! Someone on this board told me to sell my coins on ebay, best bet! Now you are ragging ebay and the buyers, so what do I do? I suppose you think me some idiot from wherever, I sell soup to nuts on ebay, I'm clearing out our home for remodeling and retirement, and we have elderly parents that have given us coins, think someone said I sounded like scam artist! so when we went to Long Beach Show, I didn't bother with people on the board, didn't know who thought I was scam artist! I can sell puzzles one day, fine collectible china the next, cigar box the next, but I'm not a good coin seller? I dont' think so! I'm a medical professional, I do my homework, not coin expert, but I find the arrogance of you and the CLUB totally unacceptable! To think I came on the board tonight to find whomever wants Kennedy half dollar, cause I thougth he might want one of fahter in laws that has not been moved since 1964 in memorium box, thought you were all decent individuals, well I guess not! your not playing fair to the newbies, as you call them! Stay in your little coin collecting world, but remember there is a big, wide, other world out there, come join, you may enjoy! Very dissappointed in all of you, Sally

  • Gee, Sally, I glanced at some of your past posts, and to me it looks like you've gotten some very good advice and the beginnings of a good coin education.

I came here a few months ago in your exact shoes. My dad died leaving a bunch of coins. We didn't know he had such a hoard, and not one of us in the family knew anything about them! I found this place, dived in, started reading books and learning as much as I can. There is a LOT to learn.

The people here are amazing! They will help you so much, and they are so generous with their time, knowledge, and they even give freebies...! You can learn so much, and they answer plenty of "stupid newbie" questions without a blink.

Stay around. Read and learn. Once you get a handle on the coins you have you'll find your path becoming clearer. Take your time. You have found an amazing resource. Don't fly off the handle; it may come back to haunt you.

    Welcome.

  • Sally,

I agree. To Forum members: Do you see how others see you, as arrogant and elitist? Not a flame just an observation that can help some of you retool your attitudes. One minute its lets protect the newbies and next you just are rude to one. What is up with that?

Why is it almost always the statement, "Not a flame..." is followed by an unwarranted flame?
It must be some internet chat room rule I'm unfamiliar with.

  • Sally,
What is the problem? Sounds like you thought you should get more money for your coins and a dealer told you they were not very
valuable? The truth about ebay(my opinion) is that it is a place to sell trick coins. Coins you can't get a good price for anywhere else.
Damaged goods if you will. Let me know what you have and I will advise you of the true value. I do it every day, for free.

    Sally,

Whoooaaa nelly, I'm a newbie, and I take offense to what you said. There has not been one time on this forum or in person where I was treated in any form shape or fashion as you described. Frankly, just the opposite.

The folks here have gone out of their way to welcome me and my son. They never "flame" me over stupid questions or look down on me because I don't have years of experiance.

Do not be so quick to judge when you don't have the facts straight. These are GREAT folks who will bend over backwards to help you and teach you, if you let them.
Maybe the attitude that needs to be examined here is yours for being so quick to condem without knowing what the heck is going on!image

So, my advice to you, sit back, relax, get to really know these folks!image You'll be amazed at what you can learn........image

Punctuation is the key to universal bliss. Interesting lecture but in the future, I would recommend that you actually organize your thoughts and make sense as to what exactly you are trying to convey
instead of treating us like your children.

    Good luck,

Could you please post the address of where your practice is? I'm very concerned that I may accidently come to your office for medical assistance one day & I want to avoid that if at all possible. image

  • I've always been treated with respect, even when I've made what some might call a stupid post. Members here may chide you a bit, except for a few. But when you get this many people there's always going to be one or two that are arrogant or full of themselves, but a very very small minority.

  • My guess is you DID talk to members of this forum at the coin show. Many of the largest dealers post here... and, I've found, most of the better informed collectors.

I'm new here also and these folks cansave you many problems if you are smart enough to LISTEN. That is one of the toughest things for all of us to do! :-)

Among other rambling things, it looks like she felt the sentimental value exceeded the $1.50 someone offered for her treasured half dollar.
The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.

Sally, could you please tell me how you can complain about someone using poor grammar and claim to be a 'Medical Practitioner ? Should you be using a comma after 'future' ? I too would be weary of visiting you in a professional capacity, unless it is I who were treating you...image

C'mon fellas. Sally comes on the Forum at 11:58 PST, that would be 4:00AM on the east coast. She makes a few grammer and punctuation errors and you want to put her on the grill?? She's new to the Forum and could probably use a little patience and understanding. There's no reason for so many to treat this new Member in such a way.

She refers to going to the FUN Show to sell some coins she had inherited. I know there was a thread awhile back referring to an older couple's choice to buy a table at the show to sell their inherited collection. The originator of the thread was asking whether that was a wise way to sell the collection versus using a dealer. If I recall the couple did quite well with a good portion of their coins. Perhaps, just perhaps, Sally was that lady at the show......

She also refers to a recent thread dealing with shill bidding. Here is one that was put on the Forum yesterday.

Sally, I hope you will provide a little more insight. It seems you feel frustrated with the advice provided my some Members of this Forum about selling your coins and the inconsistencies of resposes provided on the Forum. We are all individuals and we all have our own thoughts. We don't always (rarely) agree. Consensus is never reached. Being new, I'm sure you find the inconsistency a little frustrating. Give it a little time. Take a little more time creating your next post. I look forward to your continued participation here. Welcome! image

  • Sally,
Ebay can be an excellent way to sell your coins-- but it also depends on the type of coin you are sellling and
how that coin is presented ( a good picture scan and placing the coin in the right category are essential).
Also, if it is a 1964 Kennedy Half that you are selling, be aware that your coin will be competing on ebay with a lot of other 1964 Kennedy Half Dollars, and that could keep your bids fairly low. That is unless your
'64 Half is in super high-grade condition and has great eye appeal. I have gotten surprisingly high bids on coins I have put on ebay-- I have also broken down in sobs at how low some of my treasures went for. ( Ok, that's a slight exxateration ). I think selling coins on ebay is kind of like being a pop artist-- the songs that you think will be flops turn out to be hits, the songs you think will be hits are flops! Overall, ebay has been a positive means for selling my coins. There is definite strategy involved though. The folks here could definitely help you with coin-selling strategies-- just provide more specifics.

Mark- Thank you for your comments. Hope to see you begin posting more often, OK??

New Members, like Sally, often times get jumped by a "pack of dogs" when a little compassion, understanding and patience is really needed. They don't know the individual personalities and often times find the posts inconsistent.

Her frustration is felt by lots of new Members that try to voice an opinion. I'm hopeful we can find it within ourselves to make this Forum a more accomodating environment for those new Members looking for help and knowledge. image

P.S.- Wouldn't it be nice if Greg really was posting again? He's welcome to use my ID anytime. image
