We have a tie! The 22-S is NGC MS64 and the 26 is PCGS MS65

Both Relayer and VonZipper hit it at the same minute -- so I'll throw in another toned Canadian Half! Winners -- PM with your address!

Thanks Everyone!

Okay. so do you know your strike -- guess both grades correctly and I will send you a toned 1967 silver Canadian Half.

Update the 22 is a S mint mark -- Sorry you guys are fast!

Hard to see but a nice dark blue and auburn cresent on this one.

Also hard to see but a rainbow along most of the obverse rim.

Top one is 63 bottom one is 65 BUT how can you expect us to grade a coin by only seeing an Obv. pic?

    Let's see.......
A common date weak struck toned Peace Dollar in a new NGC holder......MS63
A better date better struck toned Peace Dollar in last years PCGS holder.....MS64
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

Actually looking at the first pic again, that strike is really weak. Can I change the first coin to MS61?image

Allright I'll admit I can see low 65 in the 26 but NGC keeps throwing me for a loop on the Peace series. image

    << <i>A 64? Gee, I still don't see a 64... >>

If you think that was bad, I honestly thought it was an AU55. I wasn`t putting it down and I think FrattLaw knows that. I hope he knows I wasn`t tring to put it down. Proves that I still suck at grading these things anyway.

I honestly thought it was a 62 but since it was in an NGC holder I thought I would get it right with 63.

Hey, No fault of your own. I am okay at grading mint state, but if it falls below about AU58, watch out world! image

CCR -- that's fine I'm not one to take it personally when someone thinks my coin is an AU55.

That's a hard date to grade for anyone unless you know Peace $ well. It might not be a 64 perhaps a 63, but I won't argue with NGC.

Almost all SanFran strikes are weak on Peace $. They are actually a good coin to cherry pick from dealers. I seen quite a few raw 22-S, priced @ $30.00 and now I know that they were probably 63s & 64s, the dealer just didn't know how to grade them and thought they were 58s/60s. A nice profit to be made if you can find them.

As for the 26, that I think is a solid 65, no upgrade, but a nice coin none-the-less. I just wish I could take better pics and you could see the rainbow effect on the rims. Real nice color.

I say it was fixedimage I made my guess on the 22 thinking it was a p mint with a very weak strike hence, the 62 guess. Hey if I had known it was a s mint i would have taken it in consideration. Do you need my info to send me something?

It seems like I'm the only idiot that will post my own NGC Peace on their board telling them that it's overgraded. image
You know, the one that would have been a 66 if it didn't have that HUGE gash over the eye?

heh, seeing that your '26 is an NGC 65 makes me happy. Is this one comparable?

Thanks FrattLaw. The reason for the grade was that I was basing it on a 1927-D. As I pointed out, I`m not any good at Peace Dollars. So, having a few slabbed ones myself, I went through a process of elimination based soley on the hair below the tiarra. As I`m writing now, I have a 22-S with me thats graded MS63 PCGS. The hair looks similar to the you have, excluding the toning. I didn`t even think to compare it til now. So, in retrospect, I could see that NGC and PCGS would more then likely see eye-to-eye on this grading wise.

So congrats to the winners. Nice toning too!

Baley -- that certainly does look nice and clean. I'd guess a 65 if the back is clean as well. The cheek is all important on these coins like Morgans. Send that one in and see what it comes back. A 66 is huge money. By the way the 26 is a PCGS coin, but not for long.

CCR -- 1927 any mint mark are also hard to grade, they tend to be very baggy and nicked up for some reason.

oh, right, i went back and saw that I had the ngc/pcgs thing switched in my head.
yah, the back's about the same, but the coin is in my Library of Coins album so it ain't gettin cased anytime soon. the reverse:

    image

I think of the coin as a 64 and a half and a nice one at that, but not quite 65 (mark on neck, hit at tail feathers)

  • Congrats go to Frattlaw for such a fair (close) outcome to a great contest. image I looked at the 22-s and thought it would be a MS63 and being in a NGC holder added 1 point to the grade. The 26 i thought had a fair shot of being maybe a tight MS66 and being in a PCGS holder subtracted 1 point from the grade. image

    Thanks again Michael
