I hate snipers

I just lost a very nice 1936D Rhode Island with less than a minute left! Damn it! Oh well. Don't be a player hater, hate the game. image

Less than a minute is nothing... I prefer snipes of 1-4 seconds.

    Next time bid more.

    I snipe, therefore I am.
  • As I have been told...

You would not have been sniped if you would have put your max bid up to the max you wanted to bid. Sniping has nothing to do with bid proxy. If the snipers bid is less then your max you will still win.

I have been out sniped many times, but I have also sniped a few myself.

Lost it hell, you never had it. If you would have bid higher you might have it.

I agree with Dog. Snipers are a part of the game, and you need to take that into account when bidding, if you want the item badly enough..

Ditto Dog...While I enjoy a good snipe every now and then, I usually just bid my max. If I win, ok, if not, oh well. Remember, there's no such thing as a one-of-a-kind on eBay.

Curiously, I bid on many $20 gold coins on ebay during the run up last month. And in almost every case, I got bid out by $5-10 on each and every lot. I bid with max bids as strong as I could and was the underbidder in most cases. In the few cases I bid stupid, I won a few of them. In one case I bid so stupid that another bidder couldn't take it .......he bid even stupider (sp?) and won the lot on a generic gold coin at 50% over CDN bid.

I only tried it once during a heritage bullet sale a little over a year ago, i saw an 1861 seated quarter in 65 and i thought the leading bid at 1850 was to low so 1 minute before close i put in a bid of 1900.

The other bidder did not go up right away so i kept watcching during that 10 or 15 minute period where anyone who already bid can bid again and sure enough he raised to 1950, iraised back to 2,000 and won the coin for 2,300. That coin was much better than the image and i think i got a pretty good price.

    hjohn74,

I'm with you man! Snipers suck! Especially the ones that snipe with only one second to go! It's just not fair!

nice snipe Russ - is it a DCAM accented hair that NTC undergraded?

hjohn74 - I have mixed feelings - depending if buying or selling

I also feel it will only be a matter of time for eBay to have autoextend of some sort, where any bid would extend the auction by 5 or 10 minutes - they have copied many features that yahoo has for free and charge 10 to 25 cents for it.

Dang Heath, if I had known you were going to post on Sunday March 16, 2003 3:40 PM

I would have surely posted a response at 3:40:01! image

Me, too. It's the evolution of bidding -- like fish growing lungs and walking on land!

I always snipe my MaxBid with 4-6 seconds....if it's not enough, so what....most times I get it for far less
than I was willing to pay......If I just put in a MAX proxy and go away, it's outbid over 4-5 days by "tickle bidders"....
    they are the DOPES......

I like that, "Tickle bidders". Nothing worse than Tickle bidders. That's why I snipe too.

Don't complain because you wanted to buy the item cheap...Bid higher.

Yep, everytime (like tonight) when I am out and can't be near the computer when an auction ends, I put in my MAX bid and leave. This time, my max bid was one hour before the end. When I got back on -- you guessed it -- ticklebidders had won it a dollar more than my max bid. It's aggravating, so that's why I snipe too.

Late sniper always gets the coin, and the early bird goes hungry.

  • What's better than a 5 second snipe???
A 5 second snipe with a winning bid of .23 higher than the next guy!

  • hjohn74,
If you would bid the max that your willing to pay then in some cases you might win a few auctions. But people like you think well I'm going to bid $1 dollar on a $20 item and then a sniper comes along and blows you out, you whine about its not fair. Whats not fair is you thinking just because you only wanted to bid a dollar and then you get out bid you should have another chance to place a higher bid. Well that just not the way the ball bounces. Second bidder sets the price when proxy bidding is involved - a max bid of $1,000 buys it for $2.75 if second bidder only went $2.50.image

I won an auction with 1 second left and beat the guy by 3 cents. Now thats a snipe. Its not the person who bids last its the person who bids the most.
