Body Bagged Morgan question

Just got this Morgan back from PCGS in a BB, the coin is blast white, I can't detect any whizzing or other alterations but it was sent back for "Altered Surface"

The outside rim is toned a dark purple, blue and green all the way around, looks like album toning? If so I can only imagine what this Morgan looked like originally

My guess is the coin was toned, someone dipped it, the Obv and Rev came clean, due to the album contact, the rim was toned to dark to brighten up? Any thoughts? Please excuse my scans.

Would PCGS kick this back as altered surface for dipping?

Tough to tell from the picture.

You can send it in under the presidential review and see what David Hall has to say about it, if anything.

I sent a Morgan in that was a freebie submission and it also came out BBed for whizzing or cleaning. If I had seen it before I sent it in, I would not have sent it.

    Rampage.

Altered Surface can include thumbing and also other forms of cleaning that changes the surface with out leaving harsh hairlines.
Maybe it's just your picture but the slightly darker area that runs from the cheek up behind the eye and to the hair could be from where somebody thumbed it to hide some small marks.
What you do is rub your greasy nose with your thumb and then rub it on the marks and the skin oil dulls the shiny contact marks.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • I dont think it has been rubbed, the dark area you see is from the scan, not the coin.
What gets me is this dark purple band all the way around the coin, why is the surface white and the outside rim dark purple?

The edge could be dark from being in a roll or album in direct contact with the paper.

I wouldn't worry so much about the rim. Can you put up a larger scan so maybe we can see any evidence of cleaning or hairlines?

Is there any luster left? It looks like it should be AU55 or higher from detail, but can not see any luster from photo/scan.

If it is dipped or treated in some way to strip the luster, it would come back bb for cleaning or altered surfaces.
  • Cleaning or hairlines would be listed as such. Forget that. Altered surfaces are tooled marks to make them less noticeable or glue in a mark or such as that. You must get a pinpoint light source and a good loupe to detect altered surfaces. Look for tooling or glue. image
