What is a 1991-P MS66 FS Jeff worth?

Yesterday, I was looking at Jefferson's on the David Lawrence site. They have a 1991-P MS66FS Jefferson listed. It is shown to be Pop 14/0. They want $675 for it, I then notice right below it is another (so they have 2 of the 14)

Now this morning on Ebay, Mark (datentype) had one closing. He had his usual $4.99 start and no reserve and it closed at $169.50.

You can argue that the "market" set this price and David Lawrence is way out of line, or that the timing was bad, and this winner made a steal (or somewhere in between.)

So what should this coin be valued at?

I know we have all of the top set holders here, so perhaps they can give some insight.

dbldie55; I am surprised with you. You know the answer to this question. The coin is worth five cents!image

I am sorry I just could not resist.

Obviously the right answer is very difficult which is the Classic problem with Modern coins (pardon the pun). It is very difficult to put valuations on these coins as the actual rarity is simply not know yet. It is possible that a hoard of MS66FS & MS67FS coins could be found tomorrow and completely change the current populations.

All that said I think the Ebay price is more realistic. I made a similair coin about a year ago when the POP was #10. It sold for around $300. I have not made another despite a lot of trying. I am sure there are more coins out there but that there will be a market for them as they are made. I expect the price to stay around the $150 to $200 level. But who knows!image

Ebay price sounds better. A 1990-D PCGS MS66 FS Jeff sold for over $1,000 not too long ago. That's quite a price.

My opinion is that Ebay has the widest customer viewing and the value is almost always what the market bears. I might know who supplies Lawrence and Hall for certain coins and it works out to a loan and then the coins are returned or trading in for fresh product i.e. they are on memo if there are no suckers during the next 6 months.

    hello mark

there is just one hole in the above statement. the value on eBay is almost always what the underbidder is willing to pay and not the true value as assigned by the winning bidder. in the case of the 1991-P, the winning bidder may have assigned a value of $350 to the coin and set his proxy there. that's the only misleading thing about auctions in general and eBay specifically.

it's also part of the reason why my collection grows as slowly as it does. there always seems to be a new-kid-on-the-block who is willing to bid more than me. while the faces have changed in the last 3 years, the outcome all too often has remained the same.

i keep eBay files of Jefferson's in MS66FS that i haven't acquired yet. it ends up being hit-and-miss since i don't see all the auctions. all i have on this date is one sale on 1/27/01 to jpalcoins for $306. while it may be over two years old, on balance with the increased demand i see it as a realistic price for the date. somewhere between the DHRC highwater retail price and the rock bottom eBay wholesale price.

Keets, I do understand what you are saying and I almost went into that scenario as well but I still feel that if you have your auctions closing at a certain wide viewing time that people will bid on a perceived value and keep the price level near where it belongs. Also, the underbidder says it worth so and so to him and that sets a second value. There are others whatching as well, and in my opinion they are scared off if it gets out of their league. It all gets confusing and there are so many factors. i just feel that over the long run the proper prices are realized if you put 100 auctions up with no reserve every week.

.........that's why i try to get 10 eBay prices before i'll feel safe about any level when bidding on 66FS Jefferson's. about the only dates that's really possible with are the silvers and most of the D mints through 1950. in the last several months i've been seeing quite a few 1939-P and D, but that's difficult to sort out with the two types. also, as i alluded to in my earlier post, the pops are quite subject to change but balanced out, in my opinion, by demand. an example would be the 1983-D which has risen from 5 coins to 9 since January when it had stayed at that level for more than a year, in MS66FS. things change quickly sometimes.

here's an interesting one for you: on 3/02/02 i paid $63.95 shipping/ins. included for a 1989-D in PCGS MS66FS that i won on eBay. at the time it was a pop 4 or 5 and highest graded. now it's at 7 with none graded higher. what would you feel is a market price for that date/grade?? with the 1991-P as a comparison, and having searched countless mint sets from both years, they're both tough. how do you think i managed to squeak that one by?? image

The reason you only paid $63.95 was I missed it!image
