  • As a newbie I thank you. Sometimes it's really hard not to be swayed by someone who has more

knowledge in a field where it definitely costs not to know, especially when they seem SO sure. More

invaluable information. Thanks and keep it coming.

imageI know how you feel! Coppers can be decieving and sealed in plastic can cause problems down the road. They can bleed to death right before your eyes and I'm not sure what will save these other than having the copper treated to stop further decay. Then it is considered by many as doctored and not conserved!

  • << <i>So, its been said here before but here goes again. When making big purchases, be sure you know what you are buying. Don’t trust anyone unless you personally know them, and know their “inside reputation”, not just their public image. Don’t be swayed by words about how great the coin is, or by the plastic, let your eyes and instincts be your guide, not a dealer's words or his/her apparent standing in the community. Built up a trust relationship with a few good dealers, they will eventually let you in on the inside knowledge.

I take full responsibility for my mistakes, but I also feel a responsibility to share some of the lessons I’ve learned from them. Collecting is great fun, but there are also plenty of land mines out there. >>

Very sage advice to ALL collectors Pushkin! You get the Smoking Pug's Fat Cat award for the day! Thanks for your thoughtful post! image

<<<with his outstanding reputation and in my mind, superior knowledge, I felt a little intimidated and stupid that I had questioned this august member of the numismatic community.>>>
That's not just limited to newbies. Collectors that are not mean, pushy & assertive but are just simply nice guys also do the same thing.
If there is the least little doubt in one's mind the coin should be returned immediatly! There will always be another chance.
Unlike sleazeBay dealers who say all sales are final because the coin is certified, a reputable dealer will take a coin back simply because you say "I don't like it." No explaination necessary.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

Dog, you are so right about Sleazebay. Even if there is no stated policy on refunds, assume that the seller will not accept the coin back. It doesn't matter if it's raw of slabbed. Unless there is a stated return policy, YOU SHOULD NEVER BUY OFF EBAY. To think otherwise is foolish. You'll lose in the end.

Seller's never have the full interest of the buyer at hand. Your only protection is to know what you are buying. If you are not sure what you are buying........you should wait until you have more research and experience in that area before proceeding. For every great deal that gets by you, there will be at least 9 other bad ones that will more than compensate. Now if only I could follow that advice!

Pushkin you are a wise man. In coins just like life it is important to take resposibility for your actions and to follow your conscience no matter what other people are telling you. It is important to buy from reputable people that you trust but in order to succeed you ultimitly need to rely on yourself.

Pushkin's advice is 100% sound. There's a real "truism" in the story. If a coin has some flaw, however slight, and you KNOW it will draw your eye every time you look at the coin - SEND IT BACK. We all talk ourselves into keeping coins because:

-someone else convinced us it was a jewel (usually the selling dealer)
-we've been looking for a long time for that specific coin
-it's really not all that serious a flaw
    -etc, etc, etc

But, in my experience at least, within the first day you will have picked out that one flaw that really gripes you and you KNOW you will never be able to look at the coin without going right to the problem and thinking "what a nice coin if only it didn't have this detraction................." For me, the point where I was really able to enjoy my collecting was when I was finally able to get past the effects of the waiting and anticipation and really judge the coin on its merits. If you have to talk yourself into keeping it, it's never going to please you. Wait for the one that makes you smile every time you pull it out to look it over! It makes a world of difference.
