Grading each coin independently? Or one coin vs another?

I have two examples of a particular colonial coin.
One is PCGS certified as an AU53.
The other is raw, but at least a few points better and sharper in my opinion.
Would PCGS (or you personally, or some other individual on the staff) examine, compare or take into consideration the already slabbed coin when grading the new coin?
My fear is that the new coin will in fact be graded lower than the old based on 'tightening' of standards recently.

We really judge each coin on its own merits and don't usually do comparisons with previous graded coins.
I'd be happy to look at both coins at the next show I'm at (ANA) and give you my opinion.
