Went to a very small show today

The wife and I headed off to a small show in a mall today. I was amazed when my mother in law asked if she could go
with us because she had never been to one and wanted to see what we were so found so interesting.image Wingedliberty
was supposed to meet us there but fell ill and missed out.image I hope he is feeling better.

Anyway there was a small square setup with about 15 dealers who had a very eclectic assortment of coins. The wife trotted
off to the dealer she had exchanged emails with who had her order waiting. She has now gotten her state quarter Whitmans
up to date, all 5 sets. One for each child and grandchild. The mother in law walked around a bit and chased me down to look
at some stuff for her, she ended up getting a silver eagle and a morgan. I discovered later that the wife had been consorting
with the copper folks and acquired the all Lincolns she need to finish but the keys.

As for me I managed to find the Roosevelts I needed to finish the silver side and got several of the clads to fill the holes.
Somehow I just feel strange paying more than face for any clad coin, sort of like buying air. I did see one of the quarters
I need, a 32s. I was leery because it was raw but asked to see it anyway. It was in F condition and they were asking
$70 for it. I looked it over closely and it didn't look right so out came the 20X glass. Now you folks tell me if I blew it or
made an intelligent decision not to buy it. The S had a different wear pattern then the rest of the coin, vertical striations
rather then smooth wear and it was not a worn as the rest of the coin. Also around the base of the S it had a dark
line almost like a seem and it didn't seem to flow into the field. The field itself in the area around the S looked different
than the rest of the field in a circular shape. It screamed danger to me and when I passed it back the dealer was quite
adament that I tell him why I was not interested. After he pressed me for an answer I told him it didn't look right to
me. Much assurance from him it was authentic but I just didn't feel comfortable with it.

Overall a pleasant diversion, and I picked up a few pieces I needed for my sets. I even made a forey in the darkside
and got a 1947 5 Peso.

  • Monday morning quarter-backing sucks. You have to trust your hunch about something not looking right. From what you described, I would be leery also.
I personally believe you made the right choice. It's better to err on the side of caution and reason than to blow money on a fraudulent fake.

    Just my 2 cents...

Strangly enough if the mm on a 32 D or S looks "bad" it's usually good.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

I wouldn't have gone $70 on what you describe without the opinion of someone I know has the expertise to know the difference between the "usual" and "unusual" bad appearance.image
