What is the proper markdown for this Indian Head Cent?

This 1868 MS63RD Indian Head Cent was for sale on ebay. It is a pretty tough date and though the image is somewhat poor, it appears to be a fairly nice coin. On the reverse the shield, which is this side's most critical area, has a large gash. The seller claims it to be a planchet defect, but who knows from the available image. My question is how much should the grade be reduced for this problem? I know if it was a small lint spot in the field it would not be grade limiting, but this seems to be more unfavorable. Is it worth one point? - or even two?

toothpuller I don't know if their is an answer for your question. It looks like a pretty heavy gash on the shield. This guys pictures all look alike. I don't know what he uses to take them, but for the coins he sells he needs to upgrade cameras. He has had several coins listed that I might be interested in, but you can't tell by looking at his pix. The other thing is you don't see many reds graded 63 by PCGS. Must be the hit on the shield. I've had smaller planchet flaws body bagged, so I am questioning his claim.

The obverse looks nice. Looks like he has a good return policy. Might be worth checking out. It's hard to belive a coin could take that kind of a hit and be so nice elsewhere, so maybe it is a planchet flaw.

The price being asked is no bargain.

  • You are right Lakesammman the obverse does look nice and it most likely is a planchet flaw. I am interested in knowing if it should be downgraded because of the severity and location even if it is mintmade defect.

I would think that the flaw (whether before or after striking) would only bring it down one point. The obverse looks nice. I think it would be worth a looksie.

This may not be precisely on topic, but as the newest of newbies regarding IHCs (my collection consists of one that is so worn the date is barely readable), I have a question about this coin.
The obverse appears to me to be perfectly aligned in the slab, but the reverse appears to be 8-10 degrees off. Is that common?

Rotated reverse (relative to obverse) is very common and rarely changes its value. Some like it some prefer a perfect coin.

I've seen some killer obverses with the grade limited by the reverse, most commonly because of coins struck through grease filled dies. This coins obv. looks like at least a 64 and is probably graded 63 becasue of the reverse only. Might make a good purchase, esp. if you make a reasonable offer.

It's a real guessing game with images like that! Hard to tell if thats a gash or a raised line from the die on the shield. Some of these have heavy clash marks and I see stuff going on under STATES and above & to the right of ONE CENT that make me wish the seller provided a closer look. The color looks great, but the obverse strike is a mystery. Almost all the feathertips look weak but that could be shadow.

It seems overpriced. Thats probably why it didn't sell. I think $350 would have been more reasonable.

  • Well its now twentyfive dollars cheaper. He has a long way still to go.

Just my opinion. MS-63 RDs have, to a coin, disappointed me. I usually purchased them because they seemed like a bargain - always a mistake for me. If you pay that kind of money and end up unhappy with the coin, well - you get the picture. I'd rther have a nice MS-64 or MS-65 RB any day than an ugly or disfigured MS-63 RD.image

Ooops, probably shouldn't have posted this opinion, I have some MS-63 RDs I want to try and get rid of.image
