Need help on this 1962 PR Lincoln....??

Hey all good morning!

I've had this Lincoln and decided to play with my camera to get a good shot. My question is this: This cent was in the original Mint sealed "wrapping", you know the cellophane type material and was just opened yesterday. What cold the two spots be on the obverse? Other than that, could this make a MS68, or MS69PR??

Thanks

Bob

  • The 2 spots are most likely carbon spots. As for grade, PR63-64..
........Ken Edited to read MS63-64. I believe it to have come from a mint set.

PR65 those are carbon spots, real common on Lincolns.
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • Okay, as I'm new, why would ya'll grade this coin as you have? I'm trying to pick your brain to learn....image
  • I have a 1964 proof 63 ANACS with 2 carbon spots on the reverse, and IMO it is much better looking than the pic of yours. Not to take anything away from your coin, it could just be the quality of the pictures. But in my thinking, if ANACS says that mine is PR 63, then mine would probablly only be PCGS 61-62. By the way, mine is away at CONECA for attribution as a Tripled Die Reverse!!...Ken
  • Cool!! But I'm sorta confused. If a coin comes as a proof from the mint, never to have seen the light of day or touched by hands, then why such a low grade, is this common?

Remember, machines did not package the proof sets so, yes it is common for coins exhibit some mishandling and environmental damage, even straight from the mint. You think a blown 1962 Lincoln sucks, I once opened 10 sealed 1964 Proof sets, and scored with all ten Kennedys being super frosty deep cameos, but when I carefully slit the cellophane open, all of the coins were grossly hairlined, probably in the 63/64 range. This just happens, and can happen frequently. Remember these sets are decades old, and have probably been handled by hundreds of dealers...dealers mind you that did not care about the quality of coin in the set.
