What do you think. Its a Raw Coin. Throw a grade at it if you wish. Lets see if we agree.

Thanks.

  • Truly nice coin! I'm remembering that I love Wingeds...

Perhaps this is a slider to low MS? The reverse is great, but Liberty's face seems like end of die life or something... a bit pocky... Please share your grading opinion. I'd love to learn to grade these better.

I can never seem to figure these out because to my eye the obverse strike makes them all look circulated, but I'll take a shot. It looks like it has very clean fields, and I'm not seeing any real nicks or dings on the devices. Assuming it has a full compliment of luster, I'll go MS65, shot MS66. Looks like it doesn't quite make FB though.

Almost looks to me like "cleaned" fields on obverse - hope I am wrong

If it goes MS65, I bet you would be happy.

I was bidding on the coin as if it would grade 63. After winning the coin I realized it was being sold by a board member here. It would not suprise me at all if the coin is higher than 63.

As usual it is almost impossible to grade from a picture. The reason I was at 63 is the lines that are on her neck. It could be Die Polish as I have seen it in that location on this date. My gut feeling is that they are slide marks and they would keep this coin in the 63 range. Pretty coin I believe. Also the strike was mentioned in this thread. Thats about as good as it gets for 25P Mercs. The Hair is always weak and makes the coin look AU at best if you are not familiar with this date.

  • I'm glad you threw in that last sentence as AU was what I originally thought it was due to the weak hair.

    Oy! So much to learn.

I agree with wingedliberty. It looks MS64 based on strike and luster. The scan does not show the hairlines you mention. That could bring it back to 63. It is always hard to get an exact uncirculated grade from a computer picture.

    64
  • I would guess 64. There are a few spots on th neck and by the date that seem to draw my attention each time I look. But, I'm n proimage

  • AU-55, wear on hair, above forhead and ear, center band worn, hairlines present on neck and in fields. does not have close to full lustre. Bottom line a good coin for a doctor.

Nice try Russ. Guess you thought this one would just slip by, huh? Funny how it works when you've got something to sell.
