  • Jim,

Great collection. Any pictures to go with those beauties?

  • Fun specialized group you've got there.

You may already know all of this - but there was a 1786 Nova at the Baltimore show in G4 or so - raw of course. Most of these are very rough as you probably know - this one was worn but round and pretty smooth. The Picker coin, a VG with some evidence of being bent, just traded privately for something like $11.5K. The finest example is acknowledged to be the Garrett primary coin which was called F back then but by todays standards might be called VF20.

I've done a lot of research into Novas and have traced hundreds from old auction records. Note that there are a lot of old coins sold raw years ago as AUs that probably would slab as 63 or better today. Just as one indication, Stacks FPL of 1989 offered 28 Novas - 5 of those coins are probably MS by todays standards. Several of the relatively recent PCGS 62 coins were called anywhere from AU50 to 'Choice AU' when offered raw over ther last several years.

I've got some neat info if you're interested -

  • Yes, I am always interested in learning more about Nova Constellatios and all colonial coins. The 1786 Nova would be a great addition to my collection, if I could acquire it. I chose Novas because I really liked the design. Everytime I receive one I often wonder who has handled this coin? I wanted to collect just one colonial type to start so, Novas were the way to go! Plus I don't have unlimited funds.

  • I'm a colonial type collector with the same 'not unlimited budget' affliction. I suppose the good news is that if these were US Type coins with similar populations they'd be $300,000 each and that would, frankly, take a lot of the fun out of it for me.

I recognize a couple of the coins you listed (there aren't that many slabbed!) so I know at least the dealers who 'handled' them in the past 2 years - though it is fun to think about the various others who 'handled' them in the 215 years since they were made.

The 86 Nova in G4 or so was being offered by the same dealer who recently had the small date in VF25. Not cheap, but I think there are less than 12 known at this point.

I'd love to see a pic of the Garrett coin as I haven't seen that one since 1980.

  • Please do.

While I realize you didn't post originally to drum up business I'm quite serious. I just missed that coin last time it was on the market and would have paid considerably more than the then asking price to secure it.

I collect colonials by major type - which means I'm interested in just one great example of any Pine Tree, one great Lord Baltimore of any denomination, one great Nova Constelatio, etc. Which means I can afford the very best example of each major type when I can find them, Actually, finding them is the hard part.

    Enjoy the coin -
