Does this look natural?

I found this coin on eBay and I really like the coin. I was wondering if these colors look Natural or if they are AT. I really like the coin so it doesn't matterif it ia AT or not. I just wanted some opinions.image

There seems to be something amiss in the way the toning receeds from the individual stars on the obverse; sort of like liquid was trying to pool away from them. Just my opinion...I am not familiar with the way half dimes tone.

My first impression was that it looks like those tab toned commemoratives. Not sure if this coin is AT or not.

I have to say it looks suspect. It would look right if the stars were not colored, but the color came right up to the base of the star. This, on theother hand, looks like someone knew that the stars shouldn't be toned, and tried to paint around them. They left too much space.

Also, the purple doesn't flow into the blue, and the colors are very discrete. I like to see a little blending (and a little purple here and there in the blue, and vice versa). I am not convinced it's real.

but if you like it and it is priced right then get it!
  • I'm just BARELY getting into the toned stuff... but it almost looks cleaned.

Out on the periphery (of the reverse), the colors are in the right order, and blend - but it seems like the center should have more gold coloration. The obverse looks strange... hence the thought about cleaning.

Then again... I could just be up in the night. image

    edited for clarity.

Looks pretty nice but i was wonderring was it cleaned at some point?

  • This is all that the auction says about the coin "Here is a nice original, problem-free half dime. This coin would make a terrific addition to any collection!". It does not say anything about being cleaned in the past but then again that description doesn't say very much about the coin at all. image

Old cleaning (hey, show me one that hasn't been. . .) with retoning from album storage.

  • I played around with the images a little, adding some red to the shot (It looks like the colors are off, just slightly)
The gold I was looking for on the obverse devices popped right out at me... Interesting.
  • DanC will you please post the images that you adjusted so that I can see what you came up with? I do not have any imaging software to manipulate the pictures.image
  • Too clean of a coin to be natural. Check out the amount of wear and lack of deposits.

    CoinAddict,

Sure - I'll be happy to. Just give me a few minutes to Re-do the work... image I didn't save them. image
  • Here you go:
Now - bear in mind, I'm just guessing - but it SEEMS like this looks a bit more natural. (still appears to have been cleaned to me) - but... you be the judge. image

edit: With the adjustments... the color flows yellow to magenta to blue-green (just like it should)

  • Thanks DanC. I actually like the images that you posted better then the images that were provided with the auction. I am really considering trying to buy the coin if it does not go to high. I now want to know a few opinions on how much all of you would pay for this coin. The seller started the coin at $10.00. There is a shipping of $5.00 therefore the coin is already going to cost $15.00 if you could pick it up for the starting bid. Once again thanks for everyone's help and opinions.image
  • CoinAddict,

    You're welcome. image
but... man - you GOTTA get some ROGAINE! image

I'm out of my league to offer any opinions on price. The PCGS price guide lists it at 22 for EF and 72 for AU.

I'm guessing in the "real world" that translates to $11 for EF and $37 for AU. image
  • DanC I do not need any Rogaine. I still have all of my hair. I am only 16 therefore I will have all of my hair for quite a while yet. image
  • I'm just pulling your leg... that author icon gives me the WILLIES! imageimage

Plus - it reminds me of what I'll likely look like in a few years. image

The reverse shows die clashing. This is very common on the half dimes from this era.

CoinAddict - it reminds me of your icon haircut - could be natural but looks suspect - cleaned a little shiny in middle?
  • I agree with most here. It does look cleaned but has retoned very nicely. I love the look of the rev.
