I just finished my Seated Dime series!

Just got home from the Baltimore show. Picked up an 1871-CC Seated Dime for the last one in the set! Also picked up a few other dates as upgrades. I still have a few more I want to upgrade, so not putting it away yet...
So what to do next? I don't think I want to do another Seated series. There's just too many coins. Thinking about Bust halves, as I like the look of them, but not sure yet...
I had the pleasure of meeting and chatting with Mark Feld at the show - as nice a guy in person as online.
Also, participated in my first live auction. It sure goes fast! I've always done Internet proxy or mail bids in the past. One coin seemed like a pretty good deal, the other I let go as the price went through the roof.
That's all to report from me.

Bust halves are a tough set too! good luck if you tackle that one, especially if you go after varieties.

How long did it take you?
Way to go Barry. I know what a tuff series that is. My set is missing only the 72-CC. Are you going to register the set?
I haven't registered mine yet because a lot of them are raw.
Again congrats.

I'd be interested to hear how long you've been working on it, and what different sources you used to find them.
Congratulations on a great achievement!
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
To answer the questions:
Took about 4 years to do, and yes, every date and MM!
The vast majority are VF-XF, a few better, a few worse (not many, and I'm working on them), and a few Proofs.
Coins came from many sources including Ebay, the major auction houses, several dealers (Osburn, Beymer, Greer, O'Donnell, Musil, Bachman, and probably a few others).
I have no interest in the registry, and only coins holdered are the keys and higher grade semi-keys.
Tom - if there are any dates in particular (or grades) you want to see pics, let me know and I'll try to accomodate. None are MS and none are problem coins, just varying degrees of wear, which is how I like them :.)
Dimeman - I saw two 72-CCs today. That's one of my weaker coins, and I wanted to upgrade it but... the 72-CC in the B&M auction (the one I gave up on) was a nice coin, but way too expeonsive. Closing bid was $3600 (without juice). Osburn had a 72-CC in a PCGS VF-30 holder. Very ugly coin with blotchy toning, and I'm surprised it got holdered at all, as it had several scratches.
Barry,
I was bidding on the 72-CC (B&M) also. I dropped out at about 2200. I knew it would go higher than trends. It was a nice coin though. You don't see too many nice 71 thru 74 CC dimes.

Jon still searching ...Huh ? Maybe one day the mercs will be finished and the Seated I believe will be next.
Hey as long as two of you are around maybe you can answer a question. Why is the 1858 so scarce ? Maybe its my imagenation but it seems they do not appear on Ebay that often.

Ken,
I hadn't noticed the '58 being particularly tough, though I've noticed similar things with other dates. For example, I've been looking for a nice 75-S MM under for a while, and haven't found one yet. I also recall it taking a long time to find a nice 1870. It's Murphy's law of coins - whichever common date you need is the one you can't find
Barry
Congrats on the huge accomplishment. That really is huge. It really is a tough series in the VF to XF (or really any grade for that matter) range. I really wanted the 72-CC in the B&M sale but dropped out at the $3,100 mark.
Good luck with your next series.
Ken,
I don't think the 1858 is that tuff either. Isn't that one of the coins I sold you last year? Some of the so called common dates are hard to find though. Especially nice problem free and in the grade you want.
Jon
How about starting half dimes next?
It's much easier than dime, isn't it?
1837 Lg date SEGS VF-30 (neat die crack at 7 o'clock)
1846 ANACS AU net EF-40 cleaned (not so sure about that)
1865 PCGS PR-62DCAM (couldn't get a better pic)
1867 PCGS PR-63
1874-CC "the key" ANACS AU net EF-40 corroded (aren't they all?)
Kudos. That makes two of us that finished with purchases from the Baltimore Show.

Congratulations on your excellent accomplishment of completing a full set of Seated Dimes. There are many TOUGH dates in the Seated Dime Series. Quite an undertaking. Great job!

Nice coins Barry. I don't see a thing wrong with that 74-CC. The 37 has the pie shape cracks coming in at 7 and 4 o'clock.
Nice coins.
