Would anyone crack an old PCGS holder and re-submit

I bought a 24-S buffalo nickel graded AU-50 in an old PCGS holder.
It sure looks like a higher grade to me, maybe AU-55.
In the early days was PCGS tighter with the grades than they are today?

If it comes back AU-50 then I'm only out the 30 bucks, but I get a new holder
If it comes back AU-55 then the price jump would be worth the effort.

What would you do?

First I would use a dealer so the cost was $13.50. Then I would crack and submit as long as you feel it would not downgrade. I broke an MS63 out and it came back MS64. My next little holder did not even look like it would come back the same grade, so I sent it in for a re-holder.

Breaking out a California in MS-66 is a big risk. Breaking a coin out of an AU-50 usually isn't much of a risk.
  • Am I still allowed to say such things under the new "Shut Yer Gob" policy?

If you see no evidence of it being bagged upon a second visit- go with it.

It's fun to work coins (most of the time. Ok, really some of the times), especially when the packages are returned and you haven't checked on the online results.

  • So now I have a question that the veterans might help me with. This California MS66 was cracked and in my stupidity I touched the coin (Coulkdnt resist). I know the coin has not been whizzed or had any stuff done to it. Would PCGS say the coin was cleaned if it had fingerprints on it. Is it possible to restore the coin to its original state? Appreciate the help in advance.

I just had a funny feeling you were going to say something like that. How did you touch it up? If all you did was swipe it with acetone it shouldn't hurt the coin. If you dipped it maybe it brought out something toning was hiding.

Don't feel bad. Everyone has done it. I've done worse.

Are you saying to send it in the original slab and that they could downgrade
their own grade? hmm! Sounds like an admission on their part if that happens.

  • I swear Numish I never did anything to the coin other than touch it. I have been told that the oil from your hands can get on the coin. I bought and cracked the coin about two years ago when I first started buying them. The coin has been returned as "Cleaned", but has never been cleaned. Someone suggested soap and water
  • P.S. I wonder if Mr. Hall considered Soap and Water as an alternative to banishment. My Mum said it worked wonders.

I wouldn't touch it but let the professionals at NCS take care of the problem. If anything can be done they'll know what to do. If not they'll send the coin back. I've had a lot of luck with them.
  • Numish, who are NCS, sorry if its a silly question, a bit new at this
  • A company that helps conserve coins they are pros and USUALLY do good.

The no risk solution is to send back for regrade. I have no figures to prove it but I'll bet PCGS is more likely to give an upgrade on thier own older holdered coins than anything else. If it comes back the same grade all you lost was the insert and the old plastic holder.
Resubmit raw at that point if you didn't get your desired grade and you are confident it will NOT go down.

I wouldn't do anything based on the holder alone. Learn how to grade COINS, then decide.

The type of old holder it's in really means nothing at all.......
PCGS is on their 6th or 7th major holder change and while it is true that the 1st slabs were slightly undergraded as far as high end coins for the grade in certian series & grades, circulated Buffalo nickels was not one of them in any type of holders.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
