Does this Flowing Hair Half Dollar seem a bit odd?

ebay auction

Granted they will not be perfect but it does seem a bit odd. Retooled hair?

If I recall properly I believe another board member bought this coin 2x.

Opinions?

I don't know anything about early dollars but it looks like it's been cleaned to harshly to ever get into a PCGS holder like the seller says.

I have one similar in a PCGS VG-08 holder. PCGS is quite forgiving on early pieces with regard to cleaning, although this does not too harshly cleaned to me. To me, this looks ok.

Looks OK to me, too, albeit with the caveat that I have absolutely no experience with Flowing Hair halves (or Flowing Hair anything for that matter).

cleaned? harsh? WHO FREAKIN' CARES??? IT'S 208 YEARS OLD!!!

i'd buy the coin in a second. terrific denticulation, this variety always looks half a grade nicer than it is, as the hair detail (NOT re-engraved) was well struck on all of these. outstanding reverse wing detail as well, not quite centered, but again, strong rims. a VERY NICE coin, thanks for the link.

OK w/ you if i bid on it?

  • good grief! it's in a pcgs holder. what more could you want?

    oh, wait...

    where's the holder?

actually, they should have added a little bit of color to the coin to hide the very harsh cleaning. would have made it much more appealing.

The coin is F-15 and has not been doctored, as far as I can see from the picture. Even G-4 examples of Flowing Hair halves have hair detail, which was incused into the design. That's why we often see G-4 1794 and 1795 halves being graded as Fine of VF, when infact they are barely VG. This coin is graded correctly. Like Mr. Dork said, these coins are graded by the dentils and rim, plus by looking at the eagle's details. Worth $900 imo.
