Need help with new digital camera, Please

gripgrip Posts: 9,962 ✭✭✭✭✭
I just purchased a Nikon Cool Pix 4500 digital camera and I need help getting good results with photos of coins. I have tried side and overhead lighting using a desk lamp, either with direct or diffuse lighting but the pictures are either washed out, dull or too dark. Also it is difficult to get a good true color picture of silver coins without some added gold or brown tones. Also if anyone knows of some good web sites with info on coin photographing. Please help.imageThanks in advance,Al

Digital Photography Review Dot Com - Your Nikon
Try shooting in Macro mode with natural light from a north facing window in the early am or late pm.
Timing is crucial but you can get some very good results.

Al, while some may be able to work with desk lamps and the like, I strongly recommend you buy one of these. Once you get it put together it will look like this. I use a Nikon 4300, and with this setup I am able to shoot pictures like this. Let me know if you need any further help. You have a great camera, with the proper lighting and mount for the camera, you will easily be able to take shots like this.

My wife got me a Nikon CoolPix 4500 for Christmas and it is the best close up camera I've ever used (I've used on low end camera before). Check out my pictures of my coins at Tom's Type Set . I had to reduce the size a lot to fit within PGGS' guide lines. You can take much better pictures if you want. Here is a picture of the date and mintmark of a 1909-S-VDB showing the die chip in the upper loop of the mintmark.
