Need help with new digital camera, Please

I just purchased a Nikon Cool Pix 4500 digital camera and I need help getting good results with photos of coins. I have tried side and overhead lighting using a desk lamp, either with direct or diffuse lighting but the pictures are either washed out, dull or too dark. Also it is difficult to get a good true color picture of silver coins without some added gold or brown tones. Also if anyone knows of some good web sites with info on coin photographing. Please help.
Thanks in advance,Al

Try shooting in Macro mode with natural light from a north facing window in the early am or late pm.
Timing is crucial but you can get some very good results.
Here's one of several threads where the Nikon 4500 has been discussed: click here
Do a search on Nikon 4500 and you'll find more.
