Counterfeit in PCGS slab?

Someone was asking about a colonial they were trying to sell at the 2002 FUN sale but the "colonial experts" said it was a fake and so the coin withdrawn.

If this coin is indeed not authentic, and the PCGS slab calls it an AU-55, how does the grade guarantee work, and is the guarantee different for the original submitter than if was purchased by someone?

We have occasionally screwed up and certified a counterfeit coin. It is a rare occurence. I can think only 7 coins in the last 17 years. The last one we did happened this year...a Clark Gruber territorial gold coin...cost us $8500.

When you suspect a coin is counterfeit and it's in a PCGS holder, you can send it us as a "Guarantee Resubmission." If the coin is indeed counterfeit we will pay you the current market value for the coin. We define current market value as the price you would have to pay to replace the coin, i.e. what could you buy this coin at a coin show for. For most coins, this is not a hard number to determine.

Contact PCGS customer service if you have any questions, or a coin you think may be counterfeit.
