Who is your "Eleanor"

With the recent talk about the 1990 leaf set, this question came to mind: Who is your "Eleanor?" I of course am referring to the PSA card that has eluded you the most in your registry set quest. Yes I borrowed the term from the movie Gone in 60 seconds. Mine is the 1990 Leaf Will Clark. I have seen it for sale on ebay in grade 10 in a single auction. I have also seen 9's for sale a handful of times in LOT auctions. And since I never needed 8 - 10 other PSA 9's from the set, I always had to pass. So lets here it people, who is your "Eleanor?"

SAH - That was a great movie.
Mine is the 1965 #22 Charlie Smith in PSA-8, with a pop of 3, and all 3 reside in sets that probably won't be broken up...jay

  • Hey mike, look at this link, pretty nice raw card, but of course, I don't trust a scans that much. Still looks decent though...Text

I was wondering for myself, I'm looking for this set in psa 7, since I don't have the cash for anything higher right now. Have you seen many decent raw cards for this set?

    My Eleanor(s)........

For the longest time it was a 1936 World Wide Gum DiMaggio (got one two months ago - yeah!). Then the list grew to include:

    1969 Topps Catfish Hunter #235 PSA 9
    1952 Topps Robin Roberts #59 PSA 8
1947 Tip Top Ernie Lombardi (Any PSA Grade)
1947 Tip Top Bobby Doerr (Any PSA Grade)

and how 'bout ANY Bid McPhee, George Davis or Ross Youngs PSA-gradeable portrait cards!

Mine is the 38 Goudey Dimaggio for the HOF PLayer set. I have only seen it in high grade. Kind of defeats the "Eleanor" rationale looking for a low grade example though.

Good post! I have so many "Eleanor's" but the card that is most frusterating for me is from the 1961-62 Fleer Basketball set. #27 George Lee in PSA 7.

  • This one is a no brainer; 1971 Topps Johnny Bench PSA 9. Two currently exist, and I doubt if either of them will come up for sale. The last one sold offline just after the National last year for $3000. Just a little bit outside of my price range image.

I can think of two quickly.

The first would be the 72 Montreal Expos Team in PSA 9 and the 2nd would be Frank Baker in PSA 9 from the same year. These cards are owned by a couple of dirty dawgs on the 72 registry and I'm pretty sure that they have plans to be buried with them.image

  • I have been fortunate enough to acquire a real Eleanor (actually it's a 1968 Shelby GT500KR). Unfortunately, I have several Eleanor's in my card collection. They are

    1959 Aaron AS PSA 9
    1970 Aaron AS PSA 9
1969 Yaz AS PSA 8 or 9 (I just sent 3 infor submission. They all came back 7's)
1973 Yaz PSA 9 (I don't think there are any so it may not qualify as a true Eleanor yet)

    Doug

gtbeaker - I owned the first 1971 Bench in a 9. I bought it for $3K and sold it for $4K. It was a beautiful card.
Looking for well centered 1958 topps baseball psa 8 and up. Also dying for a 70 Aaron All Star in PSA 9.

  • My "Eleanor" for 15 years was the 1954 Wilson Frank Ray Jablonski.
Then about a month ago, I finally got it. (it's at PSA right now) (please, grader of death-be sick the day it's graded). This is the final piece to my difficult puzzle.
It's kinda weird though. Now the long search is over. It's like I have to find something else to takes its place.
It's as though "the search" is more fun than having a complete set.

Mine was the 1951 Bowman PSA 8 Frank Overmire card. I had about half a dozen high number cards from the 1949 Bowman set that alluded me right up to the day I sold the set.

These shouldn't be that tough but they just keep alluding me.

I agree on the 79 Palmer in PSA 9
    1962 Marichal in PSA 8

The one I have been looking for the longest is a nicely centered 1970 Rose A.S. PSA 8.

Mine would be a 1969 #85 Lou Brock PSA 9 (zero pop so far). Not sure if I would shell out the cash necessary to purchase one if it ever came up for auction but I am hoping to at least see one.

Aaronman, is your Shelby a convertible? I used to own a few vintage Mustangs and my "Eleanore" in cars would be a red 1965 or 1966 Mustang GT-K convertible with pony interior. I may pick one up some day.

1984 home Graig Nettles Padres game used jersey. I have been looking for this off and on for over 15 years. The closest I have come is a Yankees home jersey, which would not look good next to my Jim Rice jersey.

Even with the Wilson Franks collection I am trying to put together, no baseball cards I am looking for compare to the jersey.

Without a doubt I'm going to say:

    71 Baylor/Baker PSA 9
    71 Munson PSA 9

  • 1950 Callahan HOF Joe Dimaggio PSA 8 or better.

Card was issues only in 1955, and the run was very limited. It is almost impossible to find even raw, and when you do it is usually stained, creased and/or badly scratched.

  • A 50/50 centered 1979 Topps Ozzie Smith RC PSA 9. Hopefully someday i could afford one.
Would love to have the 1988 OPC Sean Burke and Steve Yzerman PSA 10's for my set registry. Beleive a couple members on the board have those. I'm jealous!

I can't seem to find the T206 Wagner "Blue Eyes" in high grade. image

    Seriously,

LJB17 is right about the '70 Rose AS. I submitted one back in Sept (for the set registry special) and got an 8oc. image I had hoped it would slip by as a straight 8.

    JEB.
  • OK You had to ask.

#663 Dick Radatz 1969 Topps Baseball. Thought I finally had a sweet one and it came back from PSA as "below minimum size requirements". Ouch. Otherwise I cant find, win, or steal this card nice from nowhere.

Ben - A good friend of mine had a PSA 9 Ozzie rookie that he had a hard time unloading. His reserve was $500 on ebay, didn't sell. He dropped it to $425, it sold. That's a steal.

    Mark,
$425 is a steal. Your friend should of been patient. He could of definetly got over $500 for it. I might just have to find a nice PSA 8 soon. My last submission included the 79 OPC rc. So im anxious to see the result on it. Hoping for an 8. Take care.

  • I'm with gemint on this one: the 1969 Lou Brock without a doubt.
It's the only one of the key cards in the Topps 1967-1970 sets that I don't have a copy of. I would be quite happy with a PSA 7 as long as it wasn't distressingly off-center (which most of them are).

On a brighter note, I do have my own "Eleanor" - she's my daughter, she's eight years old, she's Gem Mint & I'm keeping her image
