Announcements - Part 1: Crossover Grades

Effective 4-1-03, PCGS will be listing the PCGS grade (or no grade) on all coins submitted for crossover that do not cross. There have been a lot of requests for this service and we think we can do it without slowing things down. Thanks to all who have given us this and many other suggestions.

Excellant - is this a prelude to letting folks list them in the registry at the PCGS non-cross grade??

I'm sure NGC will really appreciate it when PCGS calls one of their 65's a 63, AT, or damaged. David, make sure you recognize those coins when NGC has someone send those same coins back to PCGS as raw submissions!

Excellent your highness. The masses (including myself) will be pleased and will most assuredly offer more NGC coins up for crossover . . .

All kidding aside, thanks! It will stop that nagging question when I get crosses back, "What do they really think it is?"

    Hi David

It's about time !!! It seems as though you promise these ideas will be implemented almost immediately and then you take your time and when your ready you make an announcement. Is this your style ?

I believe the same is true about your implementation of the varieties in the set registry.

ps Will PCGS keep a record of these cert #'s and the grade assigned to the coin ?

Not really. It will probably raise quite a few questions about bias.

It will be very interesting to see what happens when someone sends in an NGC MS67 and it comes back uncrossed with an MS65 grade. Then when cracked and submitted raw, it comes back MS67.

I will predict that 98%-99% of the time that a coin doesn't cross it will be noted as one grade lower, which the submitter could have assumed anyway. Anyone think differently?

The ideal kind of feedback would be for PCGS to give the reason or opinion as to why a coin doesn't cross at the same grade. Doesn't NGC provide that kind of feedback when they won't cross an ANACS or even a PCGS coin?

NGC gives a little sticker which lists the reason why the coin didn't cross. The reasons I've seen them list are "coin would grade lower than required grade" or "AT" or "cleaned".

    I predict 65-70%.

I agree with Andy.No more than 65% will cross within a point. Many coins will cross 2-5 points lower. This could become an exercise for PCGS to prove their grading standards. How much bashing will PCGS give NGC,ANACS,ICG and of course Accugrade.

  • Well it would be nice to have them give it an actual grade instead of would grade one point lower or did'nt meet min. grade requested. I feel that I have paid to have it graded so I expect a grade, regardless of it crossing into PCGS holder.

imageWell Crap, didn't he make a statement after LB that it was difficult to grade a coin that was in a slab! You really can't see the whole coin that well while looking through plastic! I sent some in to be crossed and it would not have hurt my feelings if they did crack them out and grade them as I was willing to pay for this service!

    David,
While I rarely try to cross coins; I think this is appropriate plan and service.
For the rest of us users,
I too am tired of the whining. I am beginning to think if we don't like the grades that PCGS gives then we should select another service. I know "it isn't the grade but the consistency"(lol) but I think that PCGS and David have gotten the message. They are trying to set a standard which we like if our coin gets the grade; if less than our hopes we complain bitterly.
