To say I was a little shocked at the price of the Chris Short would be an understatement ($256) but I think it shows the number of people that are putting this set together outside of the Registry. I had a snipe in at $200 but it was never even placed.
This set is so tough to find, and has so many variations, that price fluctiations are going to occur. If you asked me the base price of a common these days I would say $50 for an 8 and $100 for a 9 but it depends very much on which common you are referring to.
I don't think very many people are investing in this set ( or else you wouldn't find the occasional bargain) but many are starting to put it together.
Because it's so condition sensitive I think you'll see people who accept PSA 6's and 7's for their sets. I don't think it will go lower than that because that signifies a crack in the surface.
I have always placed my set on the Registry in full view for everyone to see what I have and I wish others would do so as well. But it's obvious that there are people putting together sets that have not been placed on the Registry.
Long term, I feel the Clemente, Mays, and Rose will be the highest valued cards. However, there are likely to be some variations that occasionally trump the big three.
Do you realize it's been a year since a PSA 10 has been graded? It was a Seaver and it went for just over $1,000.
As rare as the baseball set is, I'm convinced the 1971 football set is 5-10 times more rare.

Mick, do you think there are more Rose out there? I know that Mays and others have a higher pop report than Rose and some of the other cards - is that just because it is Mays or Clemente, or was Rose a tough issue?
Thanks
I still believe, long term, Mays, Clemente and Rose will all be about the same with 9's drawing $500 to $1,000.
The clemente 10's (and I don't have one) would probably bring 8-10k.
There are also some really obscure legitimate variations. Some of which, I've never even seen, but they are listed in the pop report.
