Any of you out there that collect the Franklin series know how easy it is to find these in that ugly grey/brown mint set toning. But OH! To find that elusive rainbow of iridescent blue, green, red, purple, and golden hues! It has been quite some time since we have handled a 1958-D with this kind of color, and our client was extremely pleased with our find!

Please forward any questions to either Alex (alex@ricoins.com) or myself, Rick T. (rt@ricoins.com)

    Rick, wonderful coloring.

Perhaps you can answer these questions:

    1. what materials, contaminants, etc would result in these colors? Are there specific materials that would result in specific colors?

    2. what is the "life expectancy" of these colors? Meaning, when would they turn to black? We are told that all coins are in a state of toning, and if so, how long do we have to enjoy the vivid colors before they turn on us?

by the way, Im looking for color and rainbow toned 1936-64 Washington proofs. cheers, alan mendelson (one of your customers)

No response to my original post. Would anyone care to offer some guesses/answers to these questions:

    1. what materials, contaminants, etc would result in these colors? Are there specific materials that would result in specific colors?

    2. what is the "life expectancy" of these colors? Meaning, when would they turn to black? We are told that all coins are in a state of toning, and if so, how long do we have to enjoy the vivid colors before they turn on us?

    Alan,

    1) Sulfer, as to why you end up with rainbows on one coin and black tarnish on another may have to do with the amount and other impurities present.

    2) If the coin is stabilized, i.e. stored in a dry environment with minimal temperature variation, the rainbow should out live the owner (just don't ask me to explain your growing rainbow coins; although, I think it has something to do with the new slabs).

    thanks Steve.

So far, only "one" coin with a growing rainbow. I visited my 1950 proof Washington in the vault the other day, and the growth seems to have stopped. But it clearly about double what it was when I bought it as an NGC coin then had it crossed into the PCGS holder.

    cheers, alan mendelson
