i think somebody is on a fishing expedition!!! the coin will be bid on, perhaps in excess of $3500, but will not sell. with the present environment and the pending design changes and subsequent interest in nickels, i feel the owner/seller is trying to establish a price. JMHO.
My guess is that the reserve is set at around $5000. I do not think the seller will accept less than that. This is the second time up for this puppy, so interested bidders who lost out last time are less likely to take another run at it.
I predict the bids top out at $3500, and the coin doesn't meet its reserve.

I was going to guess somewhat lower, say $2,500, and not meeting its reserve. I usually underestimate these top end coins though. I do like that obverse, it seems a little frosted.
..........and as we round the backstretch, i see our horse is lagging at $2800. i figure all the big bidders are on there way home from work and things will heat up considerably after 8 PM. perhaps my $3500++ estimate will be low, but i still think the coin won't sell because the seller doesn't want to sell it. they only want to establish a baseline price for the future. of course, i've been wrong before!!
You guys have it nailed, I think ... I swore I was not going to look at TT until I posted, but Al tipped his hand. The $3,500 range sounds right on, but below the reserve. Gee, you Jeff guys are pretty smart!
The coin was at $3,500 just before auction close, but does not show up on my bid and track list, so that indicates it did not sell -- did not meet the reserve.
