What do you do with your "Scrap" Coins?

I have a number of "V" nickels and Mercury dimes, along with some Buffalo Nickels on which the dates and mint marks are barely visible. They are Good to Good - 4 at best. What do you guys do with the ones you have? I won't melt the silver ones. I also don't want to give them away to someone who will sell them.

Is there an organization of young collectors that use these for "Whitman" fillers?

If I could use the coins to interest young people in the hobby, that would be my preference.

Are the coins good enough for that purpose or am I better off just keeping them? Your Thoughts?

Some of them I've been able to sell. Others just sit around. I hate the idea of spending them, though I like the idea of someone finding them randomly. I've seen a guy who sells partial whitman folders, too (that is partially filled). It just sits on my shelf for now till I can figure out what I want to do with them. But giving some to YNs would be good. Though most of the time when the hormones rage the coins are the first things forgotten... image
  • You can roll the silver and sell them on e-bay if u want... or else YN's are always a nice choice! image

I give stuff like that to my nephew and niece, my neighbors son, and my son's albums. Should be easy to find some young ones that will drool over coins like that!! If you can't find any, I can help you locate a few imageimage I dropped a bunch of older whitman folders off to a numismatic club that sets up at a show I've attended, and asked them to disperse the folders to any young numismatics.

An old idea, put the coins in 2x2's, print up a little card explaining the coin, it's history, etc, and give them out to YN's on halloween, or at some other venue.

spend them, literally. i have spent probably hundreds of buffalos, ihc's, even v-nickels, etc over the years. i like to think that somewhere, somehow, i've inspired a little kid to becoming a new collector.

Yes, spend them. I look upon spending of classic coinage as planting seeds -- hopefully someone will find them, be intrigued by the design, and voila -- we've created one more coin collector.
  • Send them to me. I will gadly take them off your hands. image

my girlfriend babysits for a kid that loves coins, but doesn't have many. so he gets circulated buffs, silver nickels, quarters, wheats and anything i get on ebay that i don't like. to me it's worth it to hear how excited he gets when he sees $10 worth of old coins.

i guess he keeps asking my girlfriend how i clean them and i keep telling him not to - that there's nothing there to clean anyway. then i think back to the days when i stapled and glued my baseball cards onto construction paper so they looked better. gotta live and learn i guess.

better than sitting around playing nintendo all day...
