The view from the top....1974 topps

Hi Everyone,
If you have not noticed....there is probably going to be a change in the top spot for 74 topps baseball in the very near future.I have held the spot for quite some time but Wetzel and Wayne are chargin hard.
The competition for 74 psa 9s on ebay can be fierce with some new players also in the hunt.
I might add that both Scott and Wayne are nice guys and a pleasure to deal with.Wetzel should finish first as the cards are out there to finish but Wayne is gonna end up with an incredible gpa once he gets through.Should be fun to watch!Good luck to both.
October is a long ways away.......so dont count The Dog out!!

  • I have been watching the three of you guys wiz past me since I decided to rebuild Carlos's Set as an all PSA 8 . It certainly has been interesting watch ..... I have traded with all 3 players and can honestly say they are all great guys...Should be fun to watch the next registry awards on this one...

  • Jeff,
I didnt mean to leave anyone out, especially the outstanding job you have done with Carlos's old set.
Jeff actually traded the last two cards to me so I could be at 100% last year.I plan on returning the favor!!!
I also forgot to mention Todd Schaffer's set which is at about 85%(and another great guy).
I only mentioned Scott and Wayne's because of the warp speed and gpa's they have going.

Great job indeed. There are some impressive sets being built and it will be interesting to watch the ratings as sets switch spots from time to time as we head toward "judgement day". I echo your setiments. Scott and Wayne are top notch collectors, as are all the '74 set builders I've dealt with (Joe Tavarez, luxary wines, Todd Schaffer and others). Scott's '73 set is truly amazing.

  • Thanks guys - I appreciate that. Scott has really been working hard on his set and I would guess he will be at 100% by October. I still have quite a way to go. I think what is really amazing is Scott's collection. He has an incredible 1973 set (over 99% with 8.68 gpa), 1974 set (89% complete with 8.63 gpa), 1974 topp traded (100% with 8.35 gpa) and 1975 set (over 90% with 8.33 gpa). What a collection he has going!!! Him and Frank Smith are in a serious competition for the 1970's KING.image

I just looked at the 76 set and he is even over 65% complete with the 1976 set. Great job Scott. I think you should shoot for every 1970's card in psa 8 or better. What do you think?

  • Many do not know this but Scott is also amassing quite a K card collection as well! I knew there was a reason why I really like this guy image

I just picked up some absolutely gorgeous 74 Traded cards. So nice in fact that they have decent shots at 10's. Hopefully when the next special hits, I can help upgraded some people's 74 traded sets.
  • Ugh.. I have not even thought about the traded set.... First Ihave to finnish the main set .... Which leads me to a question about the main set ... why are the Team Checklist cards not included? Seems to me they probably should be....Any thoughts????

Those traded cards are very tough. I've probably opened two dozen packs from 1974 in the past few years. Most packs have at least one, and sometimes two traded cards. However, I've found the majority of those cards are badly O/C or miscut, even when the rest of the cards in the pack are well centered. As for the team checklists, out of those two dozen packs I only got 1 checklist card. I think they had a relatively low production number. If I recall, I believe they are also unnumbered which may explain why they are not included as part of the set.

    Brian,

My money is on you to hold them off past the 2003 Awards. Never underestimate how tough that last 10% really is!!!! And with only a .10 GPA advantage on you, Scott will need to get to around 99.5% complete to top your set rating.

Great to meet you at the Fort earlier this month!!!

  • Frank,

I think you might be right .... Dog will be tough to beat... Especially if he gets serious about upgrades... But Scott and Wayne are charging hard.... Your comment on the Fort Washington show gave me an idea.... How about a little get together in MAy on Saturday night for drinks after the Fort closes ....Maybe put a post up in the next weeks once I find a suitable hole -in-the-wall....

  • FB and Jeff,
Count me in for May.It was great meeting Frank and after watching him work at set-builders for a brief time....now I know why his sets are so strong! Hopefully in May,everyone can get together.
Now if I could just get set-builders to put out some 74s!!!!
