Which 1984-Present Baseball Sets were least produced

I'm collecting 70's cards right now, and I know that the mid 1980's/mid 1990's were so overproduced. I'm not even going to try to collect any of the sets of the last 5 years--it got too confusing.

I'm wondering if anybody knows which sets from the "overproduced" years had the least production or would be the most valuable in the era. I think 1989 Upper Deck and 1990 Leaf would get a lot of votes, but are there any other sets out there besides these 2 that anyone believes are worth collecting?

Definately 84 Donruss. If you like the 72T set,you will also like the 84D set.Mattingly rarest rookie highlights the set with a handful of future HOF cards as keys. One of the most sought after sets of the 80's in its day.Wax is still around at a reasonable price but at one time it was as good as gold if not better. image You can still see the sets around but not nearly as prevalent as the other Donruss sets.It has always been one of my favorites.image

I think the 1995 Bowmans Best set would be a very good value. Tough to find centered, great rookie run, and a much smaller set than 89 Upper Deck and 90 Leaf. Definately a better selection of rookie cards than 90 Leaf and 89 upper deck.

84 Fleer Update with the Clemens and Puckett rookies. Many dealers doubted at the time that Fleer could compeat with Topps in the update markert, and only limited ammounts were ordered.

  • I agree with Tipem on 84 Donruss. That was the set that brought me back to collecting. I would also include the 84 Fleer Update, 90 Leaf, 85 Donruss (black bordered and extremely condition sensitive, just like 71 Topps), and 92 Bowman.

  • Best looking and overlooked set is 87 Donruss. Great black borders with the little baseball design in them, better photo quality than 85 Donruss (would be 2nd choice). Rookies like Maddux, and first mainstream set rookie cards of B Bonds, Big Mac, Palmeiro , W Clark, Larkin. Very tough to get a 10 in these, 9 can be tough as well. They seem to sell for decent prices. 84 Donruss is overated (just like it's keys Mattingly and Straw) would be 3rd choice, the cards in this set for some reason just seem to yellow in the white borders. If I had to pick a Topps issue it would be 86, toughest to get a 10 in out of any 80's issue. For Fleer, would go with 86 Fleer, the Mickey Hatcher giant glove card makes this set.

    NHLfightguy,

While I agree with your analysis concerning the 87 Donruss, your answer does not address the initial post. While the 84 set is probably a little overrated, have you priced wax for both of these sets? The wax price or even set prices are a good indicator of their scarcity.
