Hate to say it, but there is a lot of chatter on that cheek...
And my gawd, stop talking for days on end about how great this was and that is...tell us about the coin and get on with it!

Those marks on the cheek have me concerned too. I don't know if I would want them on my $85K ms65 silver dollar.

However, that said, that is a rather pretty coin, I wouldn't be upset to have it in my set. I just don't think I believe that it is worthy of a 65 grade because of those marks.

    Nice, but definately overgraded.

you know, it's a really nice coin, and I'd give it MS64.8, maybe squeeking into PCGS 65 because of the overall eye appeal and maybe just a bit of "love" because it's a rare date (not saying thats right, just acknowledging that it might happenimage )

the first few things I thought of when viewing the auction were:

that's probably one of the nicest 1892-S dollars there is!

I'm a type collector, so I'll never be in the market for a condition census key date coin.

the surfaces ARE incredibly clean, all of the marks focused on Liberty's sideburns and one gash right in the eagle's breast.

Hmmm, those are grade sensitive areas,

the seller's hyperbole about it being a 66 or even maybe a 67 are bluster. its a 65, maybe a nice 65, (the luster IS nice!) maybe low end 65 (those marks are Right in the CENTER of Both SIDES!) but IMO this coin has NO chance of making PCGS 66, and probably not NGC 66 either. the coin is maxed out.

damn, that IS a nice '92S though!

$85,100 and still the reserve isn't met? That's gonna cost him at least $850 to NOT sell it!

Any bets the next bid puts it over reserve?
Here is a bidder that goes from bidding on $15 and $20 CD items to a 85,000 dollar coin.Smells fishy to me.

I bought a coin from thereedededge before - got on their e-mail list

They recently sent emails to people to get them to complain to eBay on the new 1% listing fee for reserves. (this is gonna cost close to $900 and may not sell)

I have also noticed they just started listing on yahoo.

You gotta admit it is a nice coin (too rich for my blood though).

I think this may be a great example of one of those coins that the "new and strict" PCGS just won't upgrade...at least that is what the dealers would like us all to believe. They just can't believe PCGS won't upgrade this coin so they can make an extra 100 grand. Clearly not 66 material, and not 65 for most of us, or for any other date. Nevertheless, a numismatic rarity. The high bidder may simply have thrown in a bid knowing it won't hit the reserve, just to say they bid on a $90000 coin.

The coin sure looks like a solid 65 to me. The eye appeal is great, overall the fields are nice and clean. Good strike. The marks are probably exaggerated by the lighting and the fact the coin picture is about 20x larger than normal size! Fantastic coin. Wish I could have it.

I think this coin was listed the day before the 1% rule went into effect.

Does Ebay still charge the 1% even if the item goes to "Big Ticket"?

there is a cap of $100 for a reserve auction for the reserve fees

quote on how reserve fees changed

    3. How are Reserve Fees changing?
The new Reserve fee schedule is as follows:

    Reserve Price
    $0.01 - $24.99
    $25.00 - $99.99
$100 and up Reserve Price Fee
    $0.50
    $1.00
    1% of reserve price
    (maximum fee of $100.00)

Listings with a Reserve Price of $100 and up will have a Reserve Price fee of 1% of the Reserve Price. The maximum Reserve Price fee will be $100.00.

For example, a listing with a Reserve Price of $1,000 will have a Reserve fee of $10.00. This change applies to all auction-style listings in all eBay.com categories including eBay Motors non-Vehicles categories (Parts and Accessories and Everything Else), and Real Estate auction-style format. The Reserve fee for eBay Motors Vehicles and Real Estate Ad Format remain unchanged.

The Reserve Price Fee will continue to be fully refunded if the item sells.
  • I think that is a solid 65. It would take a lot of luck to grade higher though.
  • Would I have a problem calling this coin MS-66 or even MS-67??? Absolutely not! It is SUPER in all regards,

    Yeah right!

This seller hypes his coins to the hilt. Everything is a PQ and he will put in the auction title 1 or 2 grades higher than the real grade along with a question mark. If that is not misleading I don't know what is!

    I agree, a very low end 65!
  • This coin is a real GEM. I have seen it in person. If the reeding marks were not there it would be in a 66 holder.

how in the HELL does that grade ms65 with that mangled cheek and my common date 1904-o with a comparatively mark-free cheek and clean fields gets a 64?

The high bidder was already higher - probably at $95K - and still didn't hit the reserve! image

This auction was started before the new reserve fees were implimented. It will cost them $2.

As for the coin, I am not impressed. The photo sucks.

    Mike

... and if it had deep mirror fields it would be in a DMPL holder... and if it were an 1893-S it would be in an 1893-S holder... and if it were made of gold it would be yellow.. and if it had a 990 cc engine it would be as fast as my motorcycle... and if it was a pepperoni pizza I could have it for lunch... etc. etc.

MS65 huh? well, um er.....got a big hit on the eagle and that row of bagmarks up the face by the ear is kinda rough looking, probably not that noticable in real life. I guess the clean smooth baby's ass looking cheek and the clean fields let it squeak by as a 65. Not over graded in my opinion but not undergraded either.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
