question for '68ers

Card #408, Dick Ellsworth, Red Sox

Is there a color variation on this card? Mine caught my eye because the team "ball" is (more or less) primary red (almost like the Yankee's color) -vs- the more pink-ish color of all the other red sox.

thanks!

OK, I think I got it this time...Harrelson is a "normal" red sox, Ellsworth is the odd ball. Scott

  • My Ellsworth is the same as yours, bright red.

Thanks Invader, I guess it is just an "odd" card.

In the interest of full disclosure, and given the present tone of across board chatter...I feel a need to come clean. I am currently doing this set in SGC holders. I am about 40% complete with an average grade a bit higher than 8 (in SGC-ese, 90.2). I think that there is a common theme among set collectors -- easy is no fun, and this is the challenge that I decided to take.

I very much value the incredible depth of knowledge over here, I have learned a ton.

Please don't yell -- I have several sets registered here -- Aaron and Clemente player sets and the very beginnings of a '66 set.

Scott-I have a question for you. Do you buy mostly ungraded cards to submit to SGC? or do you buy them already graded? or do you buy cards in other holders to crossover?

    Aro13,

As you might expect, there are several answers.

I actually finished this set several years ago (it might be closer to 4-5 years now) when it wasn't real painful to find nice raw stuff....but, almost exclusively commons. I was very lucky and scored several large vending lots. Recently, I started to get these graded...and have another 165 in right now. Vintageauctions on eBAY (crazysc, I think) had some real scorchers..I bought as many as I could.

The stars, leader cards, etc...I bought slabbed -- mostly PSA, but some in SGC holders. I crossed about 75 cards over when I decided to go this path.

With the cards that I have in-hand, I think I can get to about 70% keeping an 8 average...which means I've got to figure out how to attack the remaning 180 cards. I'm not excited about crossing over that many -- it's awfully costly...but crisp raw cards are getting tougher and tougher.

Scott-Yeah, that is what I figured but I was just curious. Good luck with your set!
