VDB's didn't start back until 1918. So me thinks we have a tooled fake here - good pickup on that image

    Definitley an altered 1944-d.

I hope someone dont get jipped, will try to send a message to the seller!
  • That one is definatly altered ( 4 changed to a 1 ) and it shouldn't have the VDB.
  • It is a fake made from a 1944D. You can see traces of the first 4 still remaining and some of the vdb on the bust..........Ken

Should have read farther, the seller knows it altered?
  • He states clearly in his description that it is likely a fake, and he even "calls" the hammer price to within .5%

I'd say the seller sure knows his coin market!

  • Yep, he seems to know it is 'probably' a fake according to 2 out of 5 other dealers. I wouldn't want to buy from the other 3! image

Interesting to see the price it is going for though. I never would have though one would go that high.

I'm sorry, I fail to see why that's worth anything over face value. It's not even worth 2 cents as a wheat cent because it has been defaced. There's absolutely no question that it's an altered piece, and the VDB isn't the only "clue". 1914 cents had shallower bust relief and more detail, and the rim on both sides, especially the reverse, was thicker.

  • I totally agree about the value being nil (to me). You could make them all day long in your basement for a few cents each. Someone is paying $80 for it.
