Opinions please on these two Merc dimes

I recently purchased a 1916-D and 1942/1 Merc dimes. I'm asking for all your professional opinions on: The grade of the coins? Should I consider allowing NCS to perform their magic on the coins prior to certification? Is the 16-D authentic? NGC or PCGS?
I plan on taking the coins to the Baltimore show next weekend to start the process. All opinions are greatly appreciated.
THANKS,
AL

Both coins look real and I concur with Brian on the grades and company to send to. The 42/1 might just go xf40.

I think the 16D will go Fine.

Look good to my eyes. I think ANACS might be a better choice because that 42/41 does look cleaned.

  • No one has made any comments regarding NCS. I would really like to have the coins conserved by NCS. Does anyone have any idea of the fees involved with having them perform their magic on a coin?? I would also prefer to have NGC or PCGS grade the coins. I'm not much on ANACS slabs. The coins are guaranteed so its a no lose situation. I'm really hoping they get the grades I expect though. THANKS for all your comments and suggestions thus far!!!!

ANACS is more liberal on key dates . Your examples show minor cleaning. You have a 90% chance of no net grade with ANACS. There is a moderate chance of body bags with PCGS/NGC. In my opinion, there is no reason here for NCS. ANACS has a counterfeit guarantee and their coins are very liquid, especially key dates, in case you want to upgrade at a future date.

I really don't see where NCS is going to help you with these. If they were my coins, I would send them to ANACs. As for the grades, the 42 2/1 looks to be in the ef40 to 45 range. The 1916-d could go f15. I am not offering an opinion as to whether the 16-d is authentic without seeing it first. Just some thoughts from the cheap seats...
