It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • Wow, those sure are some pretty colors on that coin. Jeffersons sure can tone great shades of many colors.

Edited to say it is real toning in my opinion (but I am just learning).

It looks beautiful and natural to me. The blue reverse doesn't seem inconsistent with the somewhat purple obverse. The luster is unimpaired. The color yransitions on the obverse aren't to severe.

Ok, here is what happend to the coin.

I got really bored last night and took a torch lighter to some coins to see what would happen, let them cool overnight looked at them this morning and posted one of the better ones to see what people thought about it. This is the first time i've ever tried AT'ing a coin. It will not be sold I figured if i got anything that looked kinda cool i'd put it back in the 2x2 and mark it AT, it is now part of my collection forever. I only did this once and i'm not going to do it anymore, i just wanted to see how easy it really was to AT a coin. After doing only 10 coins and posting the best one and getting good reviews of it i can see how big of a problem real coin doctors are, if i can make one look ok i can't imagine what people that do this everyday are doing to coins.

Well, I see you already posted the outcome, however I was going to say that coin was not naturally toned because of the very unnatural color scheme and the colors themselves in the obverse. Typically, coins that are heat treated in some way will show that unnatural gunmetal blue color which can sometimes fade into a dark green or purple.

  • Amazing what a little heat can do. It is scary that a coin can be so easily AT'd and can fool so many people.

Well Marty, you definitely "torched" me on that one. I liked the color and thought it to be natural. Oh well....

hang'em high - > where is the lynching group when you need them.

Say, did you keep it in the mint cellophane when you heated it? and how many seconds, and how far away?

Thats it, Im putting all of my coins on a cookie sheet and bake them till they are done.

Probable make a few hundred thousand if the reciepe is correct. Maybe use a little

Oregeno , parsley, garlic, salt and a few Bay leaves. That way if the toning doesnt work out,

I can always eat them for lunch. image

  • Interesting.
I was at a small local show this past weekend and happened to catch the tail end of a conversation in which the dealer was speaking in hushed tones to another person -- so hushed I had trouble hearing even sticking my head next to them over the display case image
Anyway, the dealer was discussing some person who toned nickles blue using a chemical. Evidently it only works well with nickles and looks completly natural.
