The Connecticut P MS69 State Quarter

I contacted PCGS a few weeks ago to verify the existence of this State Quarter which appears in the population report. They responded that a coin was graded as such but could give out no information on who owned the coin. All I wanted was for them to contact the person who owns it and verify that it does indeed exist. It appeared on the population report at a time when PCGS was having "several" problems with proof coins being recorded as MS. I have not found anyone who has handled the coin or can verify its true existence. If anyone owns it or knows for sure that it is for real, I would most appreciate the information. Does anyone have suggestions on how I can deal with PCGS on this matter. Thanks.

Eye: As you may recall, the CT(p) in MS69 appeared, then vanished, then appeared, then vanished, then appeared on the pop report all within a 30 day period. I have serious doubt as to the validity of this coin. If I were you (I know you are striving toward a "perfect" collection), I would ask PCGS to please follow up on this coin (i.e. contact the party who allegedly slabbed it) to confirm its existence (including the fact it is not a proof coin). Make no mistake about it - IMHO, this coin could be the difference between anyone out there achieving a "perfect" PCGS set of state quarters and falling short in the years ahead. It is important enough for PCGS to look into for the benefit of all those serious collectors of MS state quarters. image Wondercoin

A "pcgs perfect" set is, to say the least, quite a tremendous goal. My only glimpse of a "pcgs perfect" set was the BTWs.

I hate to question wondercoin, who is usually right on the mark with this type of thing, but his observation that the CT(p) in MS69 appeared, then vanished, then appeared, then vanished, then appeared on the pop report all within a 30 day period is not consistent with what my week-by-week data base of the state quarter pops shows.

Prior to the week of June 21, 2002 the pop was zero in each and every weekly on-line report since I started keeping records well over one year ago; that week the pop changed to one and has stayed that way ever since.

The changes in the pop of the CT(p) in the week of June 21 were quite significant. The total pop went from 746 to 837, an increase of 91. Of the 91, 2 were MS65s, 85 were MS66s, 3 were MS67s and 1 was the MS69.

To appreciate the extent of that one-week jump in the pop, in the more than 8 months since then, the total pop has increased by only 102 to 939, and only 2 67s have been made with none higher. Makes me want to say Hi Yo Silver, away!. Who was that masked man the week of June 21.

I have never seen the coin nor known anyone to claim ownership, BUT based on the data pattern, I would be very surprised to find out that the CT(p) in MS69 did not exist. I would bet that it does, but it would be nice to have PCGS check on it.

gerry its nice to see some people pay attention. I love the statehood series but focus on haunting proofs...I say its a fable...but you have nice evidence otherwise...eye Mitchell is right...press the issue.

Gerry: As I mentioned, the CT(p) did appear on the online pop report, only to dissappear and then reappear a couple more times. I showed it to a couple folks at the time. I can assure you the coin was on and off the pop report several times before finally settling in as a coin on the report (not sure if this was occuring in the middle or a week). WHAT THIS ALL MEANS, HOWEVER, I HAVE NO IDEA. Unlike the 1964(p) Kennedy, I do not have the "smoking gun" to prove the CT(P) is real or not. BUT, SINCE THE COIN DID FLICKER ON/OFF THE POP REPORT A FEW TIMES, IT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED IF PCGS COULD INVESTIGATE THE CIRCUMSTANCES BEHIND THE COIN. If it truly exists - great! image Wondercoin

I am still making calls and checking this coin out with no results. Have any of you out there ever seen, handled, or know that the 1999 Connecticut P in MS69 really exists? Please give me your input, thoughts, knowledge or pm me if you feel the need for privacy. Thanks.
