Leaning towers of PiSA...

... I bet everyone was expecting something else, but here's the story.

My parents are coming to visit this week and I was trying to clear a space for them to sleep in one of my spare bedrooms. Well, I decided to get rid of some extra rolls of carpet that I had stored in the room and while hauling it out, one of the rolls fell and hit 7 stacks of my PSA slabs.

I have stacks of graded cards everywhere it seems. My question is: how do you store large quantities of PSA cards? I know it's been brought up before, but I don't want the typical answers - PSA boxes, safes, safety deposit boxes, or other storage containers that you can buy online or in stores. I'm looking for something unique that not only stores the cards but allows them to be displayed or at least has easy access to retrieve, say, card #383 from my 700+ card set. I have my own ideas, just haven't followed through yet. Any help would be appreciated.

I know I've posted photos from this infamous hallway before, but here is my most recent disaster:

  • Altough the cost of a specially designed display case may not be warranted for a more modern vintage set, I am in the process of designing a large display case for my 53 Bowman color set (160 cards) so if anyone would like the plans when they (the designers) are done, in order to save on costs for additional production, just email me. For my less valuable cards, I do the typical but perhaps boding step of using the black 60 card PSA boxes with computer generated labels.
Collector of baseball PSA sets from the 1970's & hockey rookie cards; big New York Rangers fan (particularly now that they are sleeping with the enemy with Holik and Kaspiritus). Also starting to collect 53 Bowman Color as I think they are the most beautiful cards I have seen.
  • Do what I do, buy those inexpensive cd/dvd/vhs shelves, the wood/fake wood ones that you put together in like 20 minutes. I've found that a simple one of only 3 shelves about 4 feet high and 3 wide holds a ton. That way for my sets I start at the left with card #1. I also can put small labels on each shelve on the edge that says 1978 Topps #1-#140 etc. That way I know what cards are stored there. I suppose if you had so many slabs you'd have tons of these shelves, but it works well for me because I don't have that many yet. Just a suggestion.

You mean Norm Abram on New Yankee Workshop hasn't tackled a project for a customized PSA card shelf?? Maaaaaaaaaaan, let's tell him to stop with the 18th century Danish replica desks and get with the program!

Virt- i have seen many pics of your hallway / card room....do you live alone...I KNOW that my wife wouldn't let me stack cards like that anywhere...even in my own office...

I built an oak cabinet for PSA cards. It looks like a library card catalog, and in fact I could have used a library card catalog if the drawers were like 1/2 inch wider. It has 15 drawers and holds about 700 cards.

    Bruce,

That's pretty much what I'm planning. I've already sketched it up and done a take off for materials. I've just been busy with other things lately and haven't started it yet. I think I'm going to build one that will accomodate each set (when completed) that I'm working on.

    Galveston & mrc32,

I do live alone for another 3 days. Like I said, this accident happened because I was clearing space for my parents who will be visiting this week. I guess I need a larger house (or smaller hobbies). So, that basically means - no, I'm not taking any more boarders. image

    Bruce,

I forgot to ask - can you post a picture of your cabinet? I'm sure others would like to see it as well.

    Thanks in advance.

    Virt-
I like seeing pictures of your place, your card messes and anything else...keep them coming!

I'd take a picture of my collection but it wouldn't amount to much in most eyes on this board...I have only one PSA card image

I have a feeling though I too will be begining a set on the registry....

Hmmmmm the ides of spring are upon me!
Money to burn and baseball cards to hide from my wife!

    mrc32,

Thanks. I'll post them when I can.

As far as your collection goes, everyone has to start somewhere. I had only 1 PSA card at one point and so did everyone else here. There are several PSA graded cards out there right now that I'd trade every single one I have for that one individual card. image It's all relative. Your collection is just that, yours. Good luck with it.
