Home PCGS Set Registry Forum

Hey, MS68.

I've been following the progress of the (#27) David Schweitz fifty piece monster color commem set, on the 50 pc. commem registry. There was a flurry of additions, and now things seem a bit quiet. What's up, Dave?
More specifically, Dave, do you think you will find a "monster" Bridgeport or Lynchberg for your set?
The set. You gotta check out the "pop" and "pop higher" columns. He's got coins with pops of 1/0, 3/0, 5/0, 7/0, 9/0, 10/0, and 329/77, 1663/1311, 1006/836... I'd sure like to see all, especially some of those latter, high pop ones!
The rankings. (#27) This is the set to watch. image
ps. That 1/0 Ark. isn't just 1/0 for that date, it's 1/0 for the entire Ark. series.

Dave Schweitz, I think, was mentioned by HRH, as one of the best graders in the biz. It sure is intriguing, to say the least, to see those coins with those pop numbers. I'm sure you can (try to) imagine what his "1663/311 types" must look like. image

"There was a flurry of additions, and now things seem a bit quiet. What's up, Dave?"

Steve: I believe he is building a world class color set of Commems in BOTH PCGS and NGC holders. You certainly would not see the NGC coins showing up in the PCGS Registry.

  • I would like to thank everyone for the kind and flattering words about the progression of my set. It was fun displaying it at the Long Beach show and talking with all of the other Commem and color coin enthusiasts who showed up. I have not added anything to my registry page because I have come to the conclusion that a 100% monster toned set can not be accomplished by just including PCGS coins. I may not be the brightest candle out there, but am not foolish enough to exclude a wonder color coin that is far superior than enything I have seen in a PCGS holder just because at is in an NGC holder and may not be quite nice enough to cross to PCGS tougher standards. With that in mind, I will be looking for the nicest COIN I can find for my 50 piece set, regardless of the holder it is in (or not in if that may be the case). For those of you on the east coast that are interested in viewing my current set, it will be displayed at the Baltimore show this coming week. I do not have the table number handy. It is in the front of the room. I share with Numismania.

    Dave

Does this mean you are done arguing with David Hall ? Or are you just rubbing salt in the wound.Did anyone notice if David Hall has a black eye or if I saw an old picture?

I will make a point to see your coins at Baltimore !!!

    Stewart
  • Bruce- I have not put the set up over at the NGC site. If you are in Baltimore, stop by my table and take a look.

Stewart- Why are you trying to stir up controversy when none was intended by me? Are you telling me that if a brand new 1909-S VDB showed up in a NGC 68RD holder that was better than anything you have ever seen in a PCGS 67RD holder, you would pass on it due to your loyalty to your PCGS set? Who are you trying to fool, yourself?

Well, you had a soapbox, Dave. I, too, respect your decision to "pass".

I too was at long beach and was fortunate enough to view David's commem set. It was the most beautiful set of coins I
have ever seen in one case at the same time. I think Dave got a little tired of seeing me around his table so much. I'll bet
I went back a dozen times and each time I would just shake my head. What impressed me the most wasn't just his set
but the fact that he has only been at it for a year. What an accomplishment to have aquired such a collection in the short
span of one year. I was awe struck. Two coins that really stood out to me were the Washington Carver and Lafayette
Dollar. You just don't see that kind of color on those two coins. Congrats Dave and like I said if I had a spare Million sitting
around I'd be knocking on your door.....image

I have heard a lot about that Washington Carver. I've been, with Mitch, a part of finding some of the first really spectacular WCs in p7. I hear this one is a standout.
ps. I think there are about only six p7 WCs in the entire series.

Dave's WC in NGC-MS67 is a spectacular coin. I was fortunate enough to pick up Dave's "sloppy seconds" (like getting a date with the runner up at the Miss America pageant) 1952(p) PCGS-MS67 coin late last year (it and 2 other PCGS-MS67 WC's are pictured in my Museum of Coins on my website). All (3) PCGS-MS67 WC coins are spectacular as well.

Actually, another favorite coin of mine in the set is the Boone - anyone going to Baltimore - feast your eyes on that one!! image
