Elitist statement of the year. "Things are going to get worse as more state quarter people find

What a great way to inspire new collectors. When I first started collecting twenty two years ago, certain dealers treated me like garbage because I didn't have any big money to spend, just a teenager with a few bucks. The ones that treated me with respect, are the ones that I spend thousands of dollars with now, including my 64FB 1916D dime.
Adrian:
I am glad I didn't run in to you when I was young. Imagine how a YN who collects state quarters feels when reading a statement like that. The hobby needs to be inclusive. Divisions do not help. Why would you not want to spend time answering questions from newbies. Do you feel that you are above it? I have never seen you post an answer to a newbie. I guess you are above everyone?

Brian.

Hi Brian, maybe this would be better handled with PM's. mike

I prefer to state my opinion in a public forum, as the statement by Adrian was also made in public forum.
This way I cannot be acused of talking about people behind their back.

Brian, adrian is the one I kind of had in mind that you could converse with in a PM. mike
  • wingedlibertywingedliberty Posts: 4,805 ✭✭✭
Why would I need to pm him. I am simply calling his statement "elitist", which it is.
He is advocating an exclusive club on this forum and thinks that state quarter people will make this forum worse. How is that healthy for the hobby?

    Brian.
  • PushkinPushkin Posts: 2,029 ✭✭✭

I would encourage that the forum remain inclusive, not exclusive. There are a lot of young collectors who will probably start the hobby with and because of State Quarters. Lets encourage them, not suggest that we exclude them. Most of us probably started with cents, or half dollars or other common coins that were common date - but most of us have memories of others who encouraged us and mentored us in the hobby. If we want the hobby to grow and thrive, we should pass this heritage on. Put no one down for being a newbie, encourage the youngsters; there is room for everyone.

Perhaps those who wish more exclusivity might find room and time over at the Registry Set Forum?image

Adrian has donated proceeds from Ebay auctions to charitable sources and inspires his own son to collect, how is this statement in line with that spirit?

    Brian.
  • IrishMikeIrishMike Posts: 7,737 ✭✭✭
Brian, I believe the point was not necessarily made from an elitist point of view. First of all you don't have to have money to be an elitist or own expensive coins. I interpreted the comment as meaning that it has become exclusive in that there are so many posts about the same thing or same modern coins that many people no longer stop by read and post that were one time great contributors. Sometimes it gets to be a real hassle to find something interesting to read or post too. I have a washington quarter collection, but there is a limit to how much that can be written about them or proof JFKs too. Its the same pictures and comments week after week. Something new or informational about them or any other coin might lead to more coin discussions and less confrontations.
  • wingedlibertywingedliberty Posts: 4,805 ✭✭✭
    Mike:
You make very good points, but even if the questions are redundant, newbies need to be made welcome with their opening salvo of questions. Who knows, that same collectors may buy a $10,000 coin from Adrian in the future, why not think longterm?

Many statements are made on this forum, and with all due respect, Adrian should not get any special consideration because of his perceived status in the forum. If the quip was made about State Quarter collectors, I'm sure Adrian didn't mean to make it in a derrogatory manner, but I'll let him answer for himself. As for Bryan, he's got every right to voice his displeasure at that comment. I think the gist of the threads we've been seeing is that there is a desire for a certain standard of understanding to reside in these forums. Well - you have to take the good with the bad. I don't agree with Adrian's suggestion to split the forum into a modern and a classics forum. And I don't particularly care that state quarter collectors are looked down upon. People, this is a damn hobby and we're supposed to be relaxing with it! Who the hell cares whether you collect large cents or bottle caps? The point is that we get together here to learn and share - and that applies to EVERYONE, so deal with it!

I'm an Elitist stman. Don't pull my chain or I'll have you sent to the grumpy old collectors board. I just bought a Modern Pop Top and it was a quarter too. More rare than any old toned Morgan.

Yeah, see? It's stuff like that us Modern Clad collectors have to put up with!
I'm sure if I cracked it out of the slab the seller would buy it back. He's a board member that made it himself and knows a great coin when he sees one.

I think Adrian likes to stir the pot. Likes to provoke people into thinking. If YN's are spending big money, comparatively speaking, on state quarters, my prediction is they are in for a rude awakening.
If they are buying mint sets, from the mint, pulling nice examples from banks, etc, hey, more power to them. They are hunting, and that's a lot of fun.

  • DHeathDHeath Posts: 8,472 ✭✭✭
Peetie, you don't have to worry about losing Dog and Stman. All the true classic collectors know Morgans are far too common and toning is a condition rarity. They'll be excluded like the rest. Too many newbies like Morgans.image

now, on to the matter at hand.

statements like "wait till more statehood quarter collectors find this forum" reek of the attitude that drives people from this hobby. The size of your budget, or just your collecting methods just isn't worthy of being in the same room as me.

Attitudes such as this turn the joy of collecting into one big [take a wild guess]-measuring contest.

I believe the party in question should run out and set up his own invitation only forum and thoroughly enjoy it.

The US Mint says there are 139,000,000 people collecting the States Quarters. If 99 percent of them drop out of the hobby, that still leaves 13,900,000 new collectors. If only ONE perecent of those become serious collectors (Anaconda, Legend, Pinnacle type customers), that is still 139,000 BIG BUCKS new collectors fighting over a very limited supply of classic coins. That is the reason I am so bullish on this hobby! image

    Danglen,

You math is off by a decimal point. What you should say: If only 1% stay in, that would be 1,390,000 new collectors.

as for rotties - misunderstood indeed - these are gentle giants. We lost our first rottie about a year ago to an obscure blood disease - THAT was the world's greatest dog. He was only two when we lost him.

image AMEN! Inspiring YN's ,especially with new coinage, will help drive a market that many older collectors seem to be diminishing in numbers. New board members are asking for no little than information most of the times and everyone should jump on board to help if they can.
ANACONDA already has a web site, so he could add a link to the SECRET FORUM and snub those who by one means or another do not have the money, but have the desire to collect and learn. But then again, I guess most of these members became coin geniuses overnight!

Frank, Sorry to hear that. I know the feeling. But, the experience of thier companionship is precious.
    now to the topic,

Yn's should learn how to spend money wisely. Wisdom in all hobbies is imperitive. Any emotional connections to any hobby can cost a lot of money.
As far as Adrians comment, I really don't mind them, it's his opinion. He seems to have a purist approach, likes to show-off killer coins, and a pushes a button now and then to force people to think. He regularly critiques topics, how they are written, etc. He'll realize someday that a lot of times, he is on the other side of the same stick.image
Today's mighty oak is just yesterday's nut that held its ground.
  • I actually find it quite amusing how the Anaconda groupies fawn and faint over everything he says. Even though it is obvious, and he has admitted himself on several occasions, that he really doesn't know much about coins other than what is "special" and what isn't.

I bet Adrain got all the action in high school image
