If you were to make a complete set...

If you were to make a complete set of one coin, which would it be? Before you say it, I want to exclude 20th century coins (minus Barbers, Indian Head Pennys, Liberty Nickels, and SLQs). Personally, I dislike coinage from most of the 1900s. My favorite is the three cent nickel.

I collect Barber Halves, but would very much love to make a complete half dollar set (minus obscure varieties and Extremely rare dates (1878-S), from 1794 forward. All circulated VF or XF, with cool original toning and as a bonus a torrid affair with some busty babe because I was such an ultra cool cat for completing the set.

Liberty Nickles. In fact, I'm just beginning my proof and circulation sets

Complete set... Louis Eliasberg did it. That would be cool. Don't know where I would keep 15,000 coins though.

By the way, I am a type collector and have no interest in a complete set of anything by date.

  • I love Liberty Nickels too, but two cent pieces are also interesting. It's a small enough series that you can easily branch out into some interesting die varieties if interested...

I just sold my complete sets of every (non-gold) turn of the century series (and series from the first half of the 1900's)

I am working on my uncirculated and proof Liberty Nickel sets. A set I would like to complete would be the proofs in at least cameo.

Large cents, naturally....of course, every different die, not just a date set.

  • Well, I've got two Flying Eagle cents (1857 and 1858). Does that count?

I've got the business strike twenty-cent pieces (except the 1976-CC). Does that count?

I guess business strike two-cent pieces, trimes, and three cent nickels, and shield nickels ought to be easy enough. Maybe coronet large cents?

  • I love the three-cent nickels too, but they are a BEAST to put together a circulation strike set. There are some dates that you just can't find laying around because so few were made. I think I'm going to start on them once I finish up my Lincolns or Buffalos.
  • Really. I've been picking up common date three cent nickels when nothing else suited me, sort of as a distraction. I take it business strikes in the mid-1880's are tough in any grade? I'm sorry to hear that. I'll have to watch carefully for them and snatch them up as they come available.

That's a tough one. Guess I would pick Barber Halves in vf-xf. Probably almost impossible to complete, especially if looking for solid, eye appeal coins..

$5 gold from 1795 to 1807, but then again, I would need the dough!

I'd like to complete a set of seated halves, but that would be impossible for me, so I'm working on a uncirculated set of Indian Cents. Very cool coins.
