Well,

Today I choked. I should have taken this one out to the ozone, but the Charlotte Money show is just around the corner and I'm trying to be good. I have a feeling this coin will haunt me for awhile.

67 SMS JFK

I stayed in it until it got too speculative, but I just wanted to look at it up close and confirm my suspicion. Russ, whose opinion has value to me was good enough to identify this coin as coming from the "birthmark" die obverse as identified by Rick Tomaska. The slight frost fade in the dot at the hairline of the forehead is the indicator. I understand this die produced the best cameo, and that this coin was representative of an early coin from this die. The reverse is fully cameo, and possibly dcam. BTW - I was buying the coin, not the holder. I got out at $330, but I believe the other bidder would have stayed longer. Damn.....maybe I'll email him and ask for a better description and make sure he knows how special the coin is.image

  • I don't know if it would have helped, but I would probably not have bid it up so much, so as not to let the other guy know I wanted so bad, and then use Esnipe to put in the 330 bid with about 4 seconds left. Just my style, so don't take me wrong.

Looking at the bid history, you might have been able to pick it off at $205 or so. It looks like only you and the winner knew what you were dealing with, and the vast majority would never even consider a bid in the range of his original max.

Edit: OOPS! I was looking at the bid history wrong. What were you doing in there so early?

Yeah, I was at work and couldn't watch. I'd sneak back to the PC and check periodically. Guess it's time to use snipeware.

  • So after the crack out and submission does it come back 69 ucam or dcam in an NGC or PCGS slab? I can't tell from those pics.

    Eminem,

I doubt it. I was guessing at MS66-MS67 Dcam, but the possible grade could have been MS67 Cam based on the reverse and the possible field issues that can't be seen in the scan. That's what kept me out. If I could have seen it in person, I'd have had much more confidence.

Looks like the photo was doctored, too shiny on the devices, etc.

    Morris,

Have you seen the plate of the birthmark obverse die in Tomaska's book? It looks just like that.
