Guess the grade (Grades posted with pics of the slabs)

With all the hubub about PCGS grading I thought we'd have some fun - here are two Morgans - both are prooflikes, I'll give you that much - but can you guess the grade? - The pics aren't ideal, but the detail is pretty fair.

I'll post the grades later.

The light hides too much of the coin.

From what I can see, I'd hope that neither graded higher than MS63.

    Both 63s
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

I'm going to throw just a little twist into this and tell you what they would grade if they were Mercury Dimes. Possibly this just may throw some insight into the gradeing problem some have.

Neither would get the Mint State Grade as a Merc. The top Morgan would go AU58 and the bottom one would go AU55 because of all of the Action in the Fields. I suppose this on my part just might be Technical Gradeing that is applied to all Series as a whole.

Interesting Ken - but with big coins I think they expect some hits in the fields. Both of these coins are MS.

MS 63 and 65 in that order.

Frank I understand that myself but when I look at another Series Coin I usually look and Grade the Coin to the standard that is used on Mercs. I'm just wondering if others may get caught in this trap also. Figured they were MS Morgans because the Luster seems to be there from your pictures. I'm eagerly waiting to see what these are graded.

The top is a MS63 and the bottom is MS64

Ken, I agree with you. The first thing I looked for was to see if they were in PCGS holders after looking at the deep gash under the nose of the 90, and along the cheek of the 84. I would pay MS60 money for them. Sorry if I offend. I wish pictures could show the true reflectivity of the fields. On a PL or DPL dollar, EVERYTHING shows up in the fields.

Actually DMWJR came the closest to guessing. The slabs are pictured below. The 1890 is interesting in that I've seen you don't see many MS60's from PCGS, especially PL's - at least I haven't. It's actually not a bad looking coin as I would expect a 60 to appear. The 84O is also not a bad looking coin in a rattler holder. I've seen 63's that look worse, and I'd even go as far as saying it would grade 63PQ. So - can we say that PCGS' standards were tighter back then or not??? image
