    Rather harshly cleaned AU - a no-grade.

It looks like it was an AU-50 before it was worked on.

I am not sure what folks are seeing. I know if this coin was cleaned, it was done so more then 25 years ago as that is how long i have owned it.
Today i found it and several other Gold pieces in a box of stuff i have had for years and tucked them into some protecters for safe keeping.
In person the coin seems to have great luster and eye appeal. The pics i took show some lightness around the star off of the nose and behind the head
i think this was the light reflecting off of the flip as well as the weird looking area above the head again light reflection.
There are a lot of hits on the face, fields, and that one on the rim seen here in the pic.

So like you i need to learn how to spot a harshly cleaned coin. Maybe someone can explain better for us.

  • There seems to be no original lustre on the piece, it has a dull look to it...IMO.
Banned for Life from The Evil Empire™!
Looking for Nationals, Large VF to AU type, 1928 Gold, and WWII Emergency notes. Also a few nice Buffalo Nickels and Morgan Dollars.
    Monty...
  • looks like au55 to me (comparing it to my other 55's) doubt it's been cleaned

coindaughter, Looking at the obverse only. This coin has AU-BU details and the only luster seen is around the stars at 3:00 and 9:00. This is very easy to see. If these two spots have luster there should be more luster throughout the coin in the most protected areas which is above liberty's head and around the date along with area around the other stars. Also those scratches that seem to go in the same direction is a clue also. I suspect this coin was MS before it was cleaned.
MrKelso, I am sorry to bring you bad news. how do you grade it? mike

I couldn't grade it Mike. After looking at it from several different Magnification levels i thought there was something weird about it
thats why i posted it here so we could learn what was wrong. The first pic's i had up were not the best as there was to much light reflecting off of the flip.
This coin as i said was in a box of gold coins in the back of my closet for the last 25 or so years. It could be i threw them in there years ago because i thought they were
weird for one reason or another. I hve so many coins i just don't remember why they were in thereimage

I appreciate the comments, saved me the trouble of getting it graded.
