Does this ever bother you? SCAM!!!!!!

When we see coins on websites or on Ebay, they say they take credit cards, but want you to pay with a check instead. Understood the fees cost them, but I know they add those into their prices, but don't offer to discount the coin any for a check.

I'm talking mainly websites and maybe BIN on Ebay or Ebay stores. I usually don't use a credit card but like to use the Visa check card and it comes right out of my checking account, and I understand they still have to pay the fees. I even had a local dealer that takes credit cards tell me once "I knew you were going to end up doing that." So for his comment I told him discount the price some and I'll bring a check next time.

Granted, it might not be legal to discount for cash prices, but there are other ways around it. I just feel if they already added the juice for the CC, by them asking for a check is just trying to squeeze some more profit.

BTW, I usually end up sending a check, but just feel they could scratch my back also.

Anybody feel the same way? Or maybe I'm just being grumpy again?

Edited to add SCAM in the title, I know people like that.

  • Eh, what's a few bucks? I know of no business that charges differently for CC vs. cash price. Even gas stations don't do it anymore. One of you is out a few bucks, one of you has the benefit of convenience.

edited to say: if they say they take credit cards, ignore their belly-aching when you use it! Just don't try to pay in a way they don't want to....

I guess it depends on the volume the seller/dealer does. I looked into excepting credit cards for my web site, & with the low volume of business I do, I nixed the idea. But if I had went ahead with it, the cost would have been passed on to each & every sale just because its a very expensive service. Maybe a well established high volume seller/dealer would be able to grant the discount for cash, as the expense isn't so great with a higher volume of sales.

A local dealer in my area slaps on $2 to the sale as soon as a credit card comes out of a wallet.

If I put together a shipping/handling fee, normally I don't include paypal... I just eat that, not make money when a check arrives.

You can deduct the paypal as an expense on your taxes.
  • Adding to the cost of something using a credit card is illegal.

Discounting for cas is NOT illegal!

  • What is it - A 3% charge? You're paying for the convenience, so get over it!

  • Depends on how much you like the dealer as well. If it's a dealer that I like, I'll ask them what payment they prefer, if they think I'm easy to get along with I think that helps future transactions. If I don't like them, or don't care, I'll pay with a CC. They are convienent, and offer protection that cash or check can't.

No, you didn't read what I wrote. I know I'm paying for the convenience, but when I'm paying for this and then on the sly they ask for a check is what I have a problem with. Some that ask for a check will give a break.
That is my point. And when it's an expensive coin that 3% extra is quite a bit. So I say again, they could scratch my back also.

BTW, with all the ebay posts I weed through all the time I feel I could post one, if it's ok with you.

Doesn't bother me in the least. I would say you are "just being grumpy again".

Life is too short. Don't sweat the small stuff. You're going to give yourself a heartattack. Let it go.

On some items the 3% makes the difference between making money and loosing money. Prime example is gold eagles. Normally those type of sellers don't take credit cards.

If the dealer says they take credit cards and you use one they should accept it gracefully and thank you for the business. If you ask for a discount for using cash and they go for it that's good for everyone except the credit card company.
  • From someone that accepts checks/MC/Visa

If you pay me with your Credit card I can use those funds the next day. If you mail me a check I will not be able to use those funds for 10 days at the earliest. From your point of view the money is gone either way but from mine your bank is still using my/your money for up to 3 weeks (more often it is 10 days or so). So....

No discount if you want to mail me a check versus paying by credit card. If you are in my store with cash or a local check then we can talk about a cash discount.

Another note: if you are dealing with a smaller credit card accepting dealer it is likely that your check card cost that merchant just as much as a credit card to accept.

edit to add and to more accurately address original intent of stman's post:

I cannot see why a dealer would bait and switch in this manner. The fees that he may avoid by asking you to send a check instead of using your CC are not enough to justify the slow down in his cash flow.

A bad tactic all around - upset a customer and slow down your cash flow at the same time.

Good point on the availability of funds, I wasn't thinking about that!

We had a related post on this a few days back. My two cents there applies equally well here. Our business increased significantly when we started accepting credit cards. The profit on those incremental sales is much greater than the total fees we pay for credit card processing. Hence, there was no need to even consider passing on the incremental costs by charging slightly higher prices. In fact, in some respects the greater volumn covers fixed costs faster and helps keep overall prices down.
