Have any of you collected a coin when you were younger and you didnt know the value of it??

When I was 14yo the thing I collected and still do today was lincolns because they were cheep. My mom knew I liked collecting them. She worked in an auto parts store and she would bring home any wheat cents or any other old coins. This always made me so happy. Well every once in a while she would throw in a roll of bank wraped cents. Of course being 1984 they were from 1984. I would always look at my own change to see if there was anything neat. I found the 1984 doubled ear. My thought was this is cool as hell. I got to busting up the rolls of lincolns because I thought I might find more of those weird but cool lincolns. When all was said and done I had 28 of the doubled ears. I sure as heck didnt know that much at that point about doubling I knew about the 1955 double die. So I just put them in a small jar I kept cool coins in. Well having a little brother who had this thing about candy, and was crossing the road to go to the hooks and buy candy I should have known better.
2 or 4 years went by and I finally found about those 1984 Doubled ears I thought YES I have something worth some money. Ill go take them to the coin shop and sell them. Well mom took me and my brother I dumped out the cents and asked how much I could get for the pennies. Well the old man there said not much I asked him why not much. Well he said they were just common and not worth more then their face. I kinda looked at him puzzled like, and said well these are those doubled kind and said nope what you have there are 1986 cents. Of course I felt so stupid. The whole way home I racked my brains trying to figure out where I put them. I never remembered out till 2 years ago I was talking to my younger brother he now lives in Plymouth Mass (currently he is in afganstan with the army) He asked if i remembered those 2 eared pennies I had . I was like ya I do he said he was sorry if he knew they were what they are now he would have never went to hooks and bought that snikers candy bar. Well ever since then I have not been able to eat a snikers candy bar. But John my brother does collect lincoln cents and Kennedys.
