CoinAge Magazine...

Page 81:
It's kind of weird seeing the advertisement for Bowers and Merena Galleries with a picture of Q. David Bowers in the ad. It was probably too late to pull the ad but I wonder if we are going to see the same ad next month.

2 Questions on the mag though...
Are there any dealers on the message board who have their ads in the magazine?
Any dealers to watch out for?

From time to time I see something that interests me but not knowing which ones are good/bad, I tend to bypass them.

  • I'm the same way when buying coins from magazine ads with dealers I haven't worked with to that point. Although I'm lucky and haven't been burned yet. Usually as long as they have a return policy you should be pretty safe.

There are, but I just can't think of them off the top of my head... some have come up before as being no good.

Accugrade, well, so I don't get sued, let me say (I believe) they completely suck... worst "graders" ever image

  • I just got the Apr.2003 issue today and there's a pretty good article about the F.U.N. auction last Jan. and the sale of the 1963 PR70RD DCAM Lincoln cent that went for $39,100.00.

R&I Coins advertises heavily in Coinage. Rick T. joins the boards here now and again, as do some of his employees. They are top-notch with regards to the modern DCAM market...their coins cost more than some other places, but I think most here would agree they tend to have superior quality coins. IF you read enough of the ads, you can get a pretty good idea of who is okay, who is not.

I had an interesting and positive experience with Gallaway Bay one time. The owner once shipped me coins that I had never ordered - and had actually charged my credit card for them - very odd situation - I think he must have gotten credit card #s mixed up or something. I called to complain, since I didn't order the coins, and certainly didn't authorize any charges. He immediately refunded the money, and told me to keep the coins! I think he was embarrassed about the mix-up. So, for what it is worth, I can say he did the right thing - maybe even a step beyond that - in an awkward situation.

Are you referring to the April 2003 issue? I must have a rare collectible issue. On my page 81 is an ad for Norwood Coin. Bowers and Merena are nowhere to be found. image
