ANACS and toned coins

What is your opinion of buying toned coins in ANACS's holders, are they as good as PCGS and NGC at spotting artificial toning? How hard is it to get a toned coin from a ANACS holder into a PCGS?

I've had good luck with anacs and toned coins. I would imagine that each individual coin would have to be evaluated on it's own merits though. I have sold two very attractively toned coins, in particular, in anacs holders, that I wish I tried to cross over before I sold them. I'll always wonder......image

I don't know about ANACS being able to discerne real or AT toning, but in my experience with submitting Morgan dollars to ANACS in the last year, they grade toned coins tough. The ones that I had with even, original toning (not rainbow stuff), in my opinion, graded at least one point lower than they should have. I'm considering cracking a few of them and resubmitting to NGC or PCGS to see if it will make a difference.

One of which I purchased, and it crossed to NGC @ the same grade. Wonderfully, rainbowed rim toned Peace $. ANACS does a very good job with technical grading since they use microscopes sometimes for grading purposes. I'm not sure how good they are with spotting AT coins, but I have gotten BBs from them, but they do slab questionable coins with net grades.

Overall, I like and trust ANACS and would recommend them on any coin. Matter of fact two colorful PCGS coins sent to NGC with that ANACS coin were downgraded by a full point. Don't know if it was bias or PCGS upgraded because of eye appeal and NGC graded on technical basis.

I think it depends on the coin...sorry, I wish I could be more specific. I will say that I like ANACs and they provide the help that alot of collectors appreciate with their services...Breen numbers, Overton numbers, VAMs etc. Sometimes they have been inconsistent, but then again... well, lets not go there.

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

  • Here's the coin I was thinking of buying.Text I asked the advice of someone I respect and trust in this area and he said the toning looked real but I'd have a hard time crossing the coin. Thanks to all for your input.
